The Dogmother
OK, so I used to buy one with a yellow lid - I think the fragrance was called something to do with sunshine. Looking at their website, there are now 3 fragrances: new ones called Apple Blossom & Almond, and Gardenia & Vanilla (confusingly, the latter has a yellow cap). There's also one called Amongst the Flowers, which isn't flagged as 'new', but no sign of the one I used to buy. Does anyone have a scooby as to which one is the same as the old fragrance I used before?
soapdragon
DM, I suspect this is a case of 'improving' the brand (which clearly needs no improving!) and change for change's sake. I have bought the yellow one before too and am convinced that its NOT the same as the 'new' yellow capped one. The phrase 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' comes to mind. Equally, when manufacturers are planning to make major changes why can't the tell the poor consumer so that we at least have a chance to stockpile the 'old' product? Gah! The Dogmother
As I suspected, they have 'fixed it worse' I shall have to brave a supermarket and smell them to decide for myself, an email to Ecover earlier today hasn't yet had a response
Charlottechicken
Was it under the sun, DM?
The Dogmother
Was it under the sun, DM? Hmmm, could have been... Any idea if one of the new ones is the same? I don't like anything too scented, but this was just right. I also only ever use half the quantity they recommend.
soapdragon
Do you have any small, independent 'health food' type shops near you that do refills of Ecover products? They might have stocks of the 'old' one that you like so you could fill up. I know there is one in Wallingford but that's still a trip down the M40, if they have it. The Dogmother
Sadly not near here (I had thought of that) and any journey would probably notch up fuel costs Will try to get to the shops in the next few days and sniff all the new scents. Perhaps Ecover will reply to me by then. If Rosie was at home, I would get her to Facebook message them for me.
Valkyrie
I bought some plain Ecover the other day - could have been Tesco or Sainsburys - Tesco possibly. Old stock? I see the website only has scented versions. My purchase can't have been more than a month ago.
The Dogmother
Ahh, that's interesting. There's also some negative feedback online regarding the new versions. I went to Te$co and sniffed the new ones; the pink lidded version is very scented. I thought that the yellow capped one was similar or the same as the original, but I haven't had it for a while, so can't be sure. I can't get a reply from Ecover as their email keeps bouncing back
Valkyrie
Meh - correction! It was washing up liquid! Sorry DM! But it seems that also has perfume/fragrance from their website. Maybe the company has been taken over? How crazy!
Valkyrie
Update and yes they were taken over by S C Johnson. Another huge American firm (brand usually associated is Johnson Wax). Ecover took over Method and this new lot has recently acquired them this year. Not so sure about ethics and there's certainly been some naughty goings on lately. Back to the drawing board I think. Valkyrie
Found this as an alternative. Quite interesting and probably the way to go especially as someone mentioned that their eczema only flares up when using ready made brands. https://thegreenparent.co.uk/forums/viewthread/10667/
The Dogmother
Thanks K I found a different email addy for them and got a response this time.... The older fabric conditioner fragrance Under the Sun has been discontinued and replaced by these two new ones, which are quite pungent. They have no plans to keep the old one, so it's back to the drawing board for me. I have found one online supplier which has stock though, so may well be buying some from them. I like the subtle scent of the non-bio laundry liquid and don't really want it masked by something strong and synthetic.
Valkyrie
I have been using white vinegar as fabric conditioner for a long time now. It doesn't make anything smell of vinegar, but conditions nicely - I don't remember static being an issue nowadays either - and I have been able to be the power source for Blackpool in days of yore. Actually I've used vinegar as a hair conditioner before now - fantastic shiny hair. Hmmm, as my hair is growing at the mo I may have to resort to doing it again because it's starting to tangle when I comb it after washing! The Dogmother
I use it with my laundry liquid as it dissolves grease and keeps it fresh
soapdragon
Ummm, is that plain white vinegar or white wine vinegar? I normally just use Tesco non bio powder and basic Tesco 'pure' fabric softner but would happily switch to the white whatever vinegar if better/more eco! The Dogmother
It's called Distilled vinegar and you can buy it in big 5 litre plastic bottles. I use it for loads of things, not least getting rid of limescale.
soapdragon
Thanks - will put that on the list!
