wood chippings and / or hemcore?

Recommended Posts

My eglu is arriving next week but I've just had a brainwave about where to site it (v. small garden). Planning to dig up a flowerbed (old/tatty plants - no loss) which has a path up the side & is right beside the compost bin.

My question is:

When I've dug up all the plants, do I lay woodchippings thickly on top of the soil or hemcore or both? Hemcore sounds great if it helps keep poop under control but can you mix them together?

I've love some advice - there are so many great creations on this forum I'm hoping someone can help!

Thanks

By the way, just wanted to share this comment my younger son made while watching "The Great Escape". About half an hour into the film, he announced "This is the same as Chicken Run but with real people"!

Vicki if i were you i would just use hemcore. :D

Once you have removed all the plants make sure you compress the soil really well so that it is firm and the run will lie flat on the surface of the soil this will make the run more secure from any potential nasty visits from Mr Fox.

Congratulations on the eglu purchase and welcome aboard the forum! 8)

You could always leave some of the plants there if they're not too dense, I know there's nothing our girls like better than eating al the plants in our flower beds!!

I use hemcore, it absorbs poo like magic and stays nice and dry and you don't need much of it - we bought a bale for about £6 and have filled the run with it twice and we're only about a 1/3 through the bale.

I would recommend getting some heavy stones to weigh the run skirt down in case it's a little uneven

Thanks for the advice. It would certainly save on digging if I left a few plants in.

Could you also tell me how deep you spread the hemcore - is a thin layer on top of soil OK or will it get all mucky?

Eglu arriving on Friday - yipee!! Just got to get hens delivered now.

(I think I'm taking this too seriously - I couldn't sleep last night for my mind racing about my chicken run plans!)

This forum is great - so much friendly advice!
