chickenopolis
One of my girls is getting over a severe moult but has in the last few weeks started to walk backwards in a sort of "monty python" comic walk. She does walk forwardstraight then suddenly stops and goes backwards. Can't feel anything untoward on her apart from large amounts of keratin and feathers still about to come out. Any ideas? Her comb has shrunk but she is eating and drinking but less acrive than she was. Am very worried.....
Beantree
Moulting does knock chickens back severely Chickenopolis and results in lots of problems. Apart from increasing her protein intake with sunflower hearts to speed feathering up and giving her 0.5mL of Cod Liver Oil once a week to boost her immune system, there is little you can do. Worth checking her claws for length and between her toes for lodged stones in case she is responding to a physical condition. We have had many 'funny walks' after moulting where they raised one leg straight out as if stepping over something, but never actually going backwards. All our funny walkers recovered fully though. The Dogmother
As Beantree has said, this is not uncommon after a moult - they need B vits to help get over it, so a good poultry tonic such as Vit Boost or Life-Guard is good. The extra protein is always a good idea at moulting time; I add powdered Biotin to my lot's pellets when they are refeathering.
Lewis
It can also be a sign of ear mites so give them a check over and treat if necessary. I use Ivermectin spot-on as it treats both mites/lice and intestinal worms.
Grandmashazzie
Lewis if using Ivermectin can you stop Flubenvet or do you have to do both?
Lewis
Personally I use Ivermectin (and then get a Fecal Egg Count done a month later to see if they need doing) but best to double check with your vet I haven't used Flubenvet for a few years now as they haven't needed doing but I did use Ivermectin a couple times in the summer for Red Mite. The Dogmother
I use Ivomec Eprinex (a cattle pour-on) quarterly but still dose for worms with Flubenvet as my vet advises that Ivermectin isn't broad-spectrum enough to get rid of all avian worms.
