Markir
We got two chickens a month ago, one was 16 weeks old the other 18 weeks. We were told by the breeder that they should start laying between 18 -22 weeks. So far no sign of any eggs eventhough both chickens seem very happy and are lively characters. We feed them layers pellets, they have grit and oystershell in their run and treats in the evening (sweetcorn etc). During the evening, when we can keep our eye on them they get the run of the garden. A friend mentioned today that they may not start laying at all now the days are gradually getting shorter. Is this a possibility?
Chocobo
it's a possibility that now it's getting colder, and the days are shorter that chickens may not start laying till spring. i think, i'm sure if i'm wrong someone will correct me
Snowy
If they are pure breeds they may not start until spring. But if hybrids, they should start. I got my gingernuts at the end of last November, aged 18 - 20 weeks. One laid in December, the other in January.
Chocobo
that hopefully might mean some of mine may lay before spring
Snowy
Hm, but yours are pure breeds AND bantams - don't count your chickens Gina!
Chocobo
sigh... my dad might put them in a pie if they don't start laying....
Markir
Thanks for the advice I will keep my fingers crossed! They are both hybrids (Rhode Island Red/ Plymouth Rock) so hopefully there is a chance yet.
