To cube or not to cube

Recommended Posts

After deciding that I'm going to get 2 more bantams I thought I ought to mention it to DP. Well he suggested that he'd rather buy a cube than get a run extension for the Eglu. He doesn't want the chooks to take up anymore space than they already do (our garden is only 100 x 40ft). I'm not keen on the cube because it sounds a lot harder to clean. I'm a wimpy 5ft 2 girlie so don't like to exert myself much and it sounds like the cube would be a bit too much like hard work. Also I can just about reach in the Eglu with my rake so don't think it would reach under the cube. Having had the chooks on grass for a week I want to move them back to a permanent place so moving the run/cube to clean won't be an option.

On the other hand I'd love a purple cube

Opinions please

Definitely Cube! I haven't got an Eglu yet - though one is arriving next week for my beautiful bantams - but I would have thought that the Cube is easier to clean out/ collect eggs etc. No bending down involved, and I have found it very easy to look after. I love it, and when I win the lottery I am going to get one in each colour and fill them with wonderful chooks!

Cube gets my vote, i have to give the cube a full clean every 2 weeks and i'm only about 5ft 2. It does take about 2 hours but last week was the first time. I would still get the cube, then you can get loads of chickens and not worry about them not having enough space.

xx

2 hours :!: I've got a 5 month old and a toddler, it would never get done. My Eglu takes about 20 minutes. I think I'll have to stay with the Eglu

No! It doesn't need to take that long, although I've spent a while on Eglus if it's meant I'm doing something useful outside in the sun & putting off other chores indoors.

Really, I don't see that the Cube takes any longer than an Eglu! You have 2 dropping trays and larger bar sets but then I tend to just do frequent empties (with 9 hens) & bar s"Ooops, word censored!"e & Diatom, and just a good all over now & again very infrequently when it suits.

Good access to the back & one side makes it much easier. If you can achieve that on a permanent base, a Cube is easy peasy. Great fun & purple is fab! :D

We love our Cube I cleaned it out yesterday including mucking out the run which involves dismantling it ( you don't have to I just find it better) and I moved it to a better location all in under an hour.

To clean just the living quarters takes ten minutes tops with a power washer.

The Cube seems to take up less floor space than and Eglu too.

I do have a few suggestions to make it even better at the next release, I will post them on another thread in the eglus and cubes section so everyone can add suggestions too.

I don't know how many would be practical but I am sure Omlet would listen if there are good ideas for an even better Cube!

Kev.

Well that's a relief. I've pm'd another forum member to ask if I can visit and see their cube. I think I need to see one in the flesh so to speak before I decide.

I've definitely decided I want it in a permanent position. The position I have in mind does not lend itself to moving the cube to clean the run so I really need to see one.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

Now who is going to ask Omlet when the new improved Mark 2 cube will be out? (Yes I know they might not be planning one but we are :lol: )
