Gallina
The Schools area listed on the main page of the forum has been there for some time now: it would be good to hear a bit more about it. My neighbour works at a special school, and always takes the chicks she has incubated in for the children to see. Three pedantic criticisms (only three? they cry): The text on the main page says "to the the our schools area" The email link to James doesn't work The crest is brilliant, but is spoilt by the motto "benessimi sunt egli". Eglu can only be a fourth declension neuter noun like Cornu, so its plural would be Eglua, not Egli. And benessimi may be Italian, but there is no such word in Latin. "Optima sunt eglua" ("Eglus are the best") would be perfect Latin. I bet the pullarii (the ancient Roman keepers of the sacred chickens) would have liked one. Mrs Frugal
I don't think it's meant to be that serious, is it, Gallina? A bit of a joke rather than studious? As for the typos, I think that they do so much editing and moving around of things that occasionally bits do get missed but it doesn't spoil the content that much, does it? Cate in NZ
Gallina, wow I'm impressed with your Latin I hope the boys take note of that one and get it right I did Latin at school, dropped it as soon as I could though, and can barely remember anything beyond Amo, Amas, Amant Edited December 3, 2005 by Guest
Gallina
I don't think the Latin will worry anyone: I know it's meant to be fun. But it is a shame that anyone coming to that page would be unable to contact James because the email link doesn't work. I suppose if they were determined they would find another way. Mel (& Paul)
Gallina, wow I'm impressed with your Latin I hope the boys take note of that one and get it right I did Latin at school, dropped it as soon as I could though, and can barely remember anything beyond Amo, Amas, Amant Me too, I was really pants at Latin (the teacher was pretty dull!) the best thing was that when I dropped Latin I was able to study Greek and Roman mythology - much more interesting! Penny
I rather agree with Gallina - no reason why it shouldn't be correct and then it's more meaningful and customer-friendly to the people who do understand it without in any way alienating the people who don't. I'm one of the latter by the way - no Latin at my school!

Guest
I have an 'O' level in Latin too. I love it and I agree that if you're going to use it, it should be correct. I still use limited amounts of Latin in our Church music, so keep vaguely in touch with it.
Gallina
I care very much about Latin: it is sad that so few schools teach it these days. It seems odd that if you don't know a language, you just make up something that sounds a bit like it: why not ask someone who does know the language? (I will be happy to translate a motto into Latin for anyone, but please start a new thread in the nesting box if this takes off!) I also think that spelling and grammatical mistakes make a site look unprofessional, and I wince every time I open the main club page. "Library" spelt "Libuary". "questionnaire" spelt "quesionnaire", and "receive" spelt "recieve". There are also words and punctuation missing, and bad grammar! If Omlet is trying to encourage schools to use the site, I think they should take a bit more care.

The Dogmother
Personally I wouldn't dream of correcting someone's spelling on their own posts - that is private and totally up to them - besides I am rubbish at typing and my fingers can't keep up with my brain, so I end up with some sort of keyboard dyslexia myself. But I used to work for a web development company and part of my job was loading people's content onto their sites and proofing it, so I have got into the habit of checking spelling, grammar and functionality on official sites without even knowing that I am doing it . Guest
Well said Gallina - I agree with you totally. You can be chief grammar, spelling and Latin monitor!
Lesley
Kate and I stuck our necks out over spelling a long while ago and it does make you paranoid after that in case any mistakes are made I think you are right that when it is an area devoted to schools then the spelling and content should be an example....................but, it has been pointed out to James, from the day it first appeared, and I think the problem is that they are just so busy that it is taking back seat. Why not write James a nice email Gallina?

Mrs Frugal
You say that the schools section should set an example? Well from what I've seen from the teachers I've worked with in the past as a classroom assistant, they are even worse! Tom came home in year 2 with a list of spellings to learn and one of them was "towl". I thought maybe he'd made a mistake when he wrote it down and asked if it should say "howl" instead but no, he explained that the teacher had told him it was something you dry yourself on after a bath......."towel". I spent a year in the classroom helping this particular teacher and had to send up notes on pieces of paper with the correct spelling on for him to alter what he'd written on the board before the children copied it down ! Hmmmm............. Not saying that all teachers can't spell but some of the ones I've worked with certainly can't! Gallina
Your write Phil: I should of exorcised more care to avoid that trap. To late now. I cant help being a fusspot. Their are still enuff of us about who care about grammer and it dosnt cost anything to keep us happy. I know that good spelling is uneccesary: aparantly if you have the first and last letter of a word in the write place the ones in the middle can be in any order and you can still read the sentance easily. Its nearly lunchtime: Benedictus benedicat, as we all say before eating in Oxford.

Guest
Believe it or not, Gallina - I'm a right stickler for grammar and spelling - I vent most of my ire on the radio, though - which is a bit unfair because it is spoken English.. my current pet hate is the R5 traffic reporter who always says "heading north-bound" and "heading south-bound". (and the ubiquitous football pundits who have invented their own tense: "the boy's went upfield" agghhhhh!!!!) Phil
