Geoid
Sadly those are the type let off just up the road. illegal then, they can cause so much harm if you don't know what you are doing. Goverment must clamp down on these dogy dealers!
Ain't Nobody Here
If you want a laugh it is worth looking at the list if rejected petitions. There are some worrying people out there. I like these ones: "This petition has been rejected because: It contained wording that is impossible to understand" There certainly are some people out there who have more time than sense! starboyhull
I'm afraid I cannot sign this or pass it on, we have had fireworks ever since I was little, none of our animals are frightened by them, in fact our shar pei was sat our on our decking watching them........... I think this country is getting far to PC with everything, "you cant do that" "you cant say that" "you cant have these" Although I do agree that there should be tougher rules on who can sell them, but I dont agree that no-one should be able to have them.......I also think we are losing far too much of our "englishness" Just my thoughts..... I don't disagree with the principle of this but in my youth fireworks and bonfires were small scale things. What we have had is an organised 3 day"Spectacular" with industrial scale fireworks. Currently it is 1am on 7th November and still the explosions are audible even with windows closed.
Ziggy
I agree with starboyhull... there are so many things that are looked down and criticised and people are so, so protective of their own space and peace that if all these petitions got approved we'd live in a big brother society. If many people agree that they'd be ok with the thought of fireworks on one or two nights of the year, why do they still sign a petition asking for a complete ban? If some people say, 'sorry if what I do/think has consequences for those who are careful with fireworks, but I'll still go ahead asking for a ban because of all the people who are not careful', why do those same people expect consideration for them and their peace when those who enjoy fireworks fire them? I believe in non-extremes and bit of give and take, am happy to tolerate what my neighbours do, and expect them to tolerate what I do, unless any of what they do or I do causes serious inconvenience or danger, and in many cases fireworks don't do that, so banning them would be unfair and a pity. It would be like someone starting a petition against chooks in cities because of the noise they make at times... wouldn't we all be up in arms protesting that it's our right to keep chooks, even if they wake up the neighbours or their napping baby whenever they feel like having a good call out?? There might be people, and there always will be, who abuse others' tolerance, and it is not fair, but then banning everything is also an abuse and it is not fair either. KTee
I am not advocating a total ban but if you live in an inner city or even large town you will be aware that the impact of these fireworks for days or even weeks on end in confined locations has become totally different to their effects in a rural or semi-rural area. We are not talking about a few Standard Fireworks bangers and sparklers anymore. Have you seen the size, and the weight, of the plastic nose-cones on some of these rockets, for example? They are potentially lethal. Edited November 10, 2007 by Guest
KTee
For the "unbelievers" can I just say that The Somme continues tonight here in S Manchester despite the rain, as it did last night and the night before!
Ain't Nobody Here
We heard a couple of bangs tonight too - can only think they were fireworks.
Egluntyne
We've had to endure a series of salvos from a display at the pub up the road. Why they couldn't do it last week heaven knows.
xScrunchee
Yep-haven't had a day off here yet! Every single night we are having to turn the TV up because the fireworks are so loud. It is now past 10pm and they are still going off like mad, no doubt they will still be letting them off at midnight-AGAIN!!! It's because of idiots like this that we sit here saying that we wish they were banned. And just think how much wildlife has been affected by them??? We no longer have firework night-we have firework month!!!!!!!!

Helly Welly
Our next-door neighbour had his fireworrk party last night. At least he let us know in advance and didn't start until we had got the chickens in (10 chickens in boxes in our small kitchen, can you imagine the smell this morning ). At first he was just firing off the most pathetic rockets ever. However, this progressed to those boxes where you light it and a whole display comes booming out. The bangers were so loud that you could actually feel the soundwaves, let alone hear it. How explosives that powerful can be put in the hands of the general public i don't know. Bear in mind that we live in a council house area and so we all practically live on top of each other. Unfortunatley thay are also our chicken sitters so it is really hard to say anything. Guest
it's funny but i took some stuff outside to put in our recycling bin, glass, tins, paper etc- the girls were already in bed- the bin was fairly empty and i made the mistake of upending the bag that all the stuff was in and as it hit the bottom of the bin, it made an almighty crash, bang, wallop! The bin is quite near their coop. I thought, oh god, the girls will be freaking out! Not so much as a murmur, I think we worry too much about the decibel levels they can handle. On bonfire night, even when the loudest bangers were going off, they didn't make a sound (the girls that is) I kept sending DH to check on them and he said he had his ear right next to the coop and couldn't hear a thing from them. I still think, for the sake of other animals and birds, that only organised displays should be allowed though and kept to specific days so I still agree with the aims of the petition. Helly Welly
The chickens were brought in for their safety more than anything, every year the neighbour has at least one rogue firework. And trust me, the noise from these fireworks was a lot more than the noise from a crash in a dustbin.

Helly Welly
Yes i might, he's pretty reasonable. A couple of years ago he was using fireworks which left thousands of little plastic bits all over the lawn but since we complained he has stopped using those. There's a lot to be said for having elderly neighbours
