chickenlass
I'm not sure how some of you feel about Fireworks but I for one dread every firework season which seems to get longer / earlier every year. I have closed my cattery this year but in the past have spent night after night watching my /cats /dogs/ horses and now probably chickens terrified to death by what some people call "harmless fun" If like me you would like to see Today's so called "Fireworks" restricted to organised events for every ones safety then please sign this petition; http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Firework-abuse/

little cluckers
At last someone else feels the same as me. I have a lad living near me who sets fireworks off for 3 weeks surrounding Nov 5th. What a mindless idiot!! (Where does he get the money? or the fireworks as he's under 18?) He also does it during the day-where's the sense in that?-what can he possibly see in the daylight? I've added my name to the petition, so thanks for that chickenlass!
little chickadee
Signed and will send the link to everyone I know. Fireworks completely terrify my animals and I find them a big pain myself. I was nearly blinded as a child. A firework burnt my nose as it passed.

xScrunchee
I signed too. I am longing for the day when people cannot buy fireworks. I hate them with a passion.
Geoid
Sorry, but I wont sign it, as my whole family (about 30 of us) go to my aunts house (big garden in the middle of nowhere) and have a big bonfire, let off a few fireworks and have a great time. Much better than organised displays.

Ziggy
I'm sorry but I'm with Fred on this one... we have fireworks every bonfire night and every new years eve, and the display is beautiful and we warn neighbours and I have pets too so it's not like I don't care, but I don't think they should be forbidden... I wouldn't mind if they were restricted to certain times of year, that'd be fine by me, but we are very careful with safety and don't let it last for hours and we are generally very tolerant neighbours ourselves, so I expect people to put up with our own quirks for ten minutes twice a year. superjules
I have a scar on my leg from where a firework was thrown at me while I was on my way to school aged about 8 , so I'd love to see them restriced to organised displays. Last year I watched one of DS's classmates pick up a spent firework. He handed it to his dad who PUT IT TO HIS EYE to see if it was empty. If only everyone only did it for 10 mins twice a year that'd be bearable but no sooner than I'd posted my message my idiot neighbour started again! Once again it's the morons that spoil it for everyone else!!
Ziggy
I guess that's true... people who keep going, and people who don't think twice about safety, make it much worse than it would be otherwise... Put a firework to one's eye to see if it's empty???? Oh dear....
Laura & CTB
I've signed. I'm not against people having fun with fireworks in their own back yards but why do they have to be so loud! When I was a kid we had fireworks that looked pretty but were virtually silent.

Laura & CTB
Organised displays are even louder True - but they're not usually in the middle of a housing estate!

Popcorn
I think only people with Government approved licenses should be able to handle fireworks. Once again, it has been in the news where some prank let off a firework in a shop selling fireworks. The minority do spoil it for the majority, but when people's lives and safety are compromised, there has to be a ban on general sale and use by the public. It's the same story every year. It can be prevented.

It's the same story every year. It can be prevented. I fully understand what you are saying and the intentions in wanting a ban, but I'm sorry to say it is not fair... In driving too, the minority who drink drive, drive dangerously, or put others' life at risk in any way while at the wheel by being aggressive or inconsiderate, people's safety is compromised, yet no one would consider banning common people from driving... I realise fireworks are not needed as driving is, but again forbidding it is not the way to go... We have had private fireworks party for years without a single incident, and I can't see why we should be penalised for other people's stupidity... If that was the case I would be able to claim bans on many people around here for many things, from car driving to dog ownership, and I wouldn't, cause I don't think it's fair to generalise everyone because of some cases. chocolatedog
It's not just stupidity though - it's the fact that people who have terrified dogs never quite know when their poor animals have to be kept in/sedated etc etc. as the fireworks are not just restricted to one night (or even 2 if 5th falls during the week....) - they are let off willy-nilly, and even folks having their own "responsible" displays, if they're all on different days spanning a week or so (or even spanning much longer in some areas of the country) are adding to those problems......my sister used to have 2 dogs both terrified of fireworks - she could be walking her dogs up to a week or more earlier than Bonfire night, and if the dog heard the bang of a firework, it would just run......... she had the odd occasion the when one or other of the dogs was out all night and she was beside herself with worry - she was just extremely lucky they came home in the end. There are plenty of notices in our vets' waiting room every year attesting to the fact that much loved pet dogs have run away - and not been seen since............ so I think fireworks should be banned except for 2 nights of the year - or one night only if 5th falls at a weekend. (Unless of course, you also include New Year's Eve..... in which case 3, or 2 respectively)

Ziggy
I wouldn't mind (wouldn't love it either, but would happily accept) having them restricted, to the weekend before and after bonfire night, and new year's eve... Hopefully that should give pet owners not too long a time to have to restrain their pets, as it's true that sometimes the private displays explode out of nowhere in the middle of any week around bonfire night... I'm all for balance... no ban, but directives to keep everybody happy
xScrunchee
People have only started having fireworks at new year since the millenium haven't they? I don't remember hearing quite so many before that. Anyway, my family (Mum, brothers, sister etc) have always had fireworks on the saturday closest to the 5th November and so far we have not had any incidents but it only takes a firework to be made wrong and who knows what may happen. I worry about the distress the loud bangs cause to the wildlife too. There was a bit about that on The One Show this evening.

I physically jump with every bang and end up with my head buried in OH so that I can't hear them so much or of course see them - total waste of money! I much prefer to stay at home, from where I can see both the displays in Horley - which are beautiful - but don't have the noise.
bronze
Fraid I cant sign My best idea would to have particular days for fireworks to be allowed such as new years, 5th nov, etc but to also have it so you can apply to have a license for special occasions which would involve one person being certified to do the fireworks and of course only certain places would get it such as secluded hotels for weddings rather than houses in the middle of housing estates. That way fireworks could also be used at larger events such as carnivals etc.
