Fox Watch

Recommended Posts

Hi!

Does anyone have one of these? Fox Watch, that is? I have just got one as i want to give the hens more free range time and hopefully keep them safe too, as I cannot supervise them every minute they are out.

I really hope it genuinely works... what do you think?

I might be wrong but I can't see how it will work if the chickens are free ranging. Surely the chooks would trigger it. If it's going off all the time then the fox will become immune to it .

Having said this I haven't got one and if it does work when they free range I'll buy one now.

I can't answer your question as I don't have one yet - however, would be interested to find out if they do work as been thinking about buying one since my girls let out a huge uproar from the garden the other day. Even though I didn't see a fox, I did find a pigeon with a missing head.

I have had one of these for a couple of weeks now. I was very sceptical at first. We had regular visits from a fox during the day, he was quite fearless

and not scared of us at all. One night the fox ripped the polythene cover from the top of the Eglu run  Since I have installed the Foxwatch I can honestly say I haven't seen the fox at all. But, I still keep an eye out when

the chickens are free ranging, but I do it from the warmth of the kitchen instead of being in the garden. Fingers crossed I think the Foxwatch does work.

I've got one, and I wouldn't be without it. Just like you, Tessa - looked out of the window and saw the fox pawing at the polythene cover! I'd seen him in the garden several times before, and had pawprints on top of the Eglu. Since I got Foxwatch - not a sign.

Be cautious though - I use this to deter him from visiting my garden, not as an absolute preventative. I don't think they get immune to the noise, Shirl, but I do think that the sight of a nice fat hen free-ranging might be enough to make him overcome the noise. I still supervise free-ranging time, and I wouldn't rely on the Foxwatch to protect them.

I have mine set up behind the Eglus - so that I don't trigger it every time I go to see the girls, and they don't set it off; otherwise the batteries run down really quickly.
