Avid-Myrtle
I have had my chikens for 8 weeks now (they rule my whole life....) Penny the Gingernut was the biggest but the the 2 pepperpot are now a lot bigger...... Penny has been laying nearly everyday for the last 5-6 weeks but the others have not started yet. My questions are Are the a lot bigger then the GN? Should they get big combs and wattles cause mine are only very tiny still? Will thay ever lay....no only kidding I know it is a waiting game Thanks
ktdot
I've had my Bovans Nera, which is a Pepperpot, for 8 weeks. Sha was 17 weeks when I got her and she has grown a lot since then. She is a very large chicken now. She is still not laying (don't get me started....) and is not crouching either. Her comb and wattles are quite red now but not huge. This is a pic of her. Is her 'headgear' like your Pepperpots?
Mrs Frugal
My Pepperpot has always had a much smaller comb and wattles than my Gingernut and yours looks about the same as mine. Hopefully she'll start laying soon. Frustrating, isn't it! I'm still waiting for my Sussex Girls to start too but no sign of crouching from them either . jomaxsmith
This is my Maran Cuivre who looks similar to your Pepperpot and the Bovans Nera so I'm assuming she's got similar parentage. She's 17 weeks in this pic (taken a fortnight ago) and has very small 'headgear'. She's not crouching and is my most flighty hen. She also doesn't eat much compared to my Coral who's laying. She's a lot bigger and 'bustier' than my other two hens. Jo
Egluntyne
My Pepperpots are much bigger than my Gingernuts. Now I come to look at them, they do have less impressive headgear too.....and they were later to come into lay.

What colour eggs do they lay? I was told 'white with a pinky blush'.
Snowy
This is my 2 year old pepperpot: Big Bad Bertha! She is much bigger than the gingernuts, and mine also has the most well developed comb and wattles! But I haven't had her from 'new' so I don't know how long it took her to grow them! jomaxsmith
What's your Coral like in the 'headgear' department Pretty big and red I bought her at the same time as the others as POL and she lays small eggs every other day. They are the same colour as bog standard supermarket eggs (beige-y pink) Jo
chickencam
Our Pepperpots have not got enormous head gear and they took between 4 and 6 weeks to lay from when they arrived and it took them a while to lay good sized eggs ( above 55g) One of our Pepperpots is all black and her comb is nearly all black with speckles of red. Avid-Myrtle
well you all have made me feel better my two look like jomaxsmith's hen the most, and they are indeed very flightly....so the wait continues..... It just seems unfair to poor Penny who produces 13 days out of 14 and is holding the fort for the other 2. There again she is/was the scary hen.....she legend in with all my friends who come round, she pecks your feet if you stand still too long, she follows us to the potting shed to get out the treats sits in the corn tin while I try to squeeze my hands round her to get the corn in the bowel...she walks to heel better then the dogs...we have caught her half way up our stairs looking for us. We never thought that Chickens could be so much fun and eat in to your day so much. We are demolising our summerhouse to make it into a winter place for them so just off to buy hemcore now.....thanks to everyone on this forum for advice and tips
chocolatedog
Our Bovans Nera is slightly larger than our Rhode Star, but our Speckled Star is the biggest, even though she's younger than the other 2 by about 5-6 weeks.....she took a long time to develop her comb, but she really started to look "red' just before starting to lay, although she never squatted (and still doesn't!! )

Will thay ever lay....no only kidding I know it is a waiting game Thanks don't worry. Its not a good time of year really - moult time. Georgie, my 4 year old Pepperpot, is moulting, looks a state and has given up laying. My other girls, all around 25/26 weks old are not laying. I'm feeding them well, giving them a bit of spice as well. I've wormed them all just to be safe - and I'm just waiting. They will get round to it in time! As regards combs and wattles, the Orps have pretty reasonable wattles, and are growing combs - but no eggs. The Buff Sussex aren't growing either. Liz and Daisy have -ish appendages! As I say, I reckon its time of year and a matter of being patient.
