Shirl
I observed some odd behaviour in one of my ex batts. She was picking up the straw and trying to tuck it in her tail (such as it is)/wings. I've seen behaviour like this when we had lovebirds and they were nest building. I've never heard of a chicken doing it though Has anyone else seen their girls do this? Shirl
Jules.
When Buzz started laying she would take some of the shredded paper from the nest box & put it on her back as she sat there.
Helly Welly
Mine wiil pick up the shredded paper after they've laid and put it on their back too. You'd think they'd make the nest before they laid wouldn't you
The Dogmother
The do it whe they are laying or broody - it's a left-over process from when they used to be jungle birds and build nests.

Cate in NZ
I think it's brilliant, only a few days out of the cage and she's reverting to "normal" chicken behaviour already . They are such resilient, forgiving creatures aren't they
BeckyBoo
bless her, she's just getting a go at instinctive behaviour, how really really lovely. Ours used to cover their backs with straw when they sat on the nest, not so much now. How really touching to hear your hen is having a go at stuff she should have been allowed to do months ago. Richard
I think it's brilliant, only a few days out of the cage and she's reverting to "normal" chicken behaviour already . They are such resilient, forgiving creatures aren't they It shows how hard-wired their brains are. Some behaviour is so firmly entrenched in there that it just won't shift. Bit like men really!
