Shirl
Well I've had my 3 ex batts 2 weeks today so still very early days. One is laying about 5 eggs a week, another has laid 2 in 2 weeks (one of which was eaten) and the other hasn't laid at all. I'm just curious really. Is she likely to ever lay? She was in a poor condition and is much smaller than the other 2 so it might be down to her condition but I thought batts laid regardless. Karen & co.
Fairy my smallest and least feathered girl didn't lay for months, and her comb was tiny, with hardly any wattles when I got her I guess that when there are so many in a cage they don't know which one isn't 'pulling their weight' and no one noticed Bless her once she put on a bit of weight, grew a few feathers and behaved more like a chicken, she started to lay I think she is probably just loving being free and is too busy doing chickeny things to think about laying eggs karen x
Shirl
That's a relief. I thought maybe she was in a really bad way and wouldn't last long. I see you have 2 ex batts which are no longer with you. How long did you have them before they departed?
Karen & co.
Hi We had had Pixie for 6 months and Elf for 9 before they died The other 2 girls from the same rescue are in fine fettle even though Sprite still looks a little tatty, she now has feathers on her neck for the first time her rear end and tail feathers are still a bit thin on the ground but bless her she lays like a trouper and Fairy looks like any little brown hen and was my most oven ready when I got her Good luck with your girls karen x
Guest
different farms treat their birds differently- we got 2 chickens in fairly good nick and 2 that looked they'd been pulled thru a hedge backwards. It all depends on her age and what she's been through. The farm they got her from might run their hens into the ground before letting go of them. There's no guarantees with ex-batts. maybe she'll start laying when she's in better condition. we hoped for maybe 5 eggs a week collectively, but we get about a dozen on average. S'pose we were just lucky. even if ours didn't lay at all, I wouldn't part with them for the world now. Good luck!
Guest
Shirl are your ex batts freindly? I still want some but the anti-chicken says NO. If I could convince her they are friendly she might change her mind. Of our three only June is friendly, Pengy is less so and Bunny won't let you near her! When we get more Mum wants another "June" as she is so friendly.
Shirl
Yes they are by far our friendliest. We can actually stroke them when feeding them and they don't run away all the time. You're welcome to bring anti-chicken to meet them.
