Snowy
This is mine Cat: It's 2.5 x 4 metres and I have 10 hens in it. They do get out to freerange a lot in summer, but I am rationing them now as the grass is struggling (but we do still have grass!) I usually let them out if it's sunny as in the winter the run doesn't catch the sun, so they leg it to the bottom of the garden for a quick sunbathe! I prefer the cube on the outside as I have shrubs and perches inside. It also means I don't have to open the run door to egg collect (very difficult to keep all 10 very determined girls from escaping). Ours cost about £100 in the end - that was for the roof (not on in the picture). The wood was old pallets and the wire mesh was from freecycle. Cinnamon
Oh, can I play? The Hubby is building our MK2 run over the holidays - we are making it a new, improved, rat proof version of the one in my gallery & in the inspirations thread. Its going to be hexagonal, with a 3 layer brick wall as a base & proper foundations so the little monkeys can't dig in I will get out in the garden & take some photos soon
CatsCube
Good god Sarah sounds like your building your girls a conservatory!!! Snowey that is great. I would like to put the cube on teh outside for the reasons you mentioned but unfortunatly it would mean makeing the run smaller as I dont have room for them both to be next to each other. Im about to start drawings and calculations on how it will all fit (including artist impressions of the final piece lol! And I will be showing the other half all of yours as they look great. Will keep you updated on what he says.
Cinnamon
Good god Sarah sounds like your building your girls a conservatory!!! Funnily enough, thats what we do for a living - build conservatories The shape has come from the area its going int, which was where our pool used to be.....round you see. Its going to be great because we can learn by all the mistakes we made first time around,& rectify them with this build.

CatsCube
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mummys getting a new run!!!!!!! I approached the subject last night by saying 'I want to discuss a proposal involving the chickens' And the imediate response was 'Your not putting anything bigger out there' He then however said its cause the garden already was over run and ruined by them. Ahh ha I said, that is where my new plan comes in. I proceeded to show him my drawings and the lovely run pics posted in this thread (thank you ladies) And he said 'you do what ever you want' and proceed to give me a bit of a lecture on how I should have thought about this when I did my research before getting them yada yada yada (I did and I knew full well they would damage the garden and need a nice new structure or larger omlet run, I just didnt want to tell him that from the outset or I would never have been allowed them ) So Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh Will be building the new run in the new year! Thank you allfor your great pics and info, links etc. - I may end up picking you brains a little more when construction starts.

sparkleeeeee
catscube, we live not far from you and we might have some more mesh spare in the new year, i have just given some to Rona, it is really heavy guage mesh perfect for runs. you are welcome to have a look at my second recycled run attempt for my cube for ideas (the first one has now been removed as it wasnt the prettiest of things). we might be able to help you out with some wood as well. CatsCube
Thank you sweety that lovely of you. O have been hunting for mesh on the net today, most places seem to sell it in 25 meter minumums and I worked out I only need 14 meters max, as two sides are fenced and Im putting on a roof. sparkleeeeee
hubbie gets the really strong mesh from a place behind the american golf shop on the ringroad, its £16 a sheet which is 8ft by 4ft. it is really thick, you will not find this in a roll as its solid, we often have offcuts from this in the yard.
