bronze
I rarely use anything on my face and since I stopped its improved a lot. I still get my pre- men spots on my forehead but its not nearly as bad as it was. Every now and then I do use something as I'm sure the gunks building up in my skin (paranoia) but ti cant really be too bad otherwise it would look worse not better right? pelicano
Very interesting - thanks for your responses. Where would I get a microfibre face cloth from? Again, when I tried water only, I wondered how long a detox period would last, and if my skin would eventually get less oily as a result. My skin first got oily at about age 12, and I became quite obsessed with it - I abused it horribly with multiple cleansers and astringents, as I became obsessed with stripping it of the oils. Of course, it pumped out even more oil as a result. These days I use a PH balanced cleansing bar and essential oils, so I don't get too many spots, but it is still just as oily/shiny. Guest
This is what I use. They have others in the range too. http://www.e-cloth.com/viewproduct.asp?sid=6281200&pid=37&type=bathroom I also love the car washing kit - no chemicals there either and the car looks showroom finished! Ain't Nobody Here
I just use water on my face and have done so for years and years. I've got very dry skin and have to put aqueous (sp?) cream on afterwards or it feels horrible and tight. If I ever use soap it feels like my face has shrunk . pelicano
Thanks for the tips. My hair is slightly less greasy today. The salt water helped a bit, although dried the rest of it horribly. Am going to try a water only wash today and hope this little blip is passing.... Am also trying to brush my hair properly to try to distribute the oils down to the ends - might as well try to make the most of all this extra grease! pelicano
At the risk of boring you all the tears (!), I thought I'd update to say that my hair is looking pretty good! It's not too greasy (just some at the roots that really doesn't notice), and it's curly not frizzy. Am very glad I didn't give in to the lure of the shampoo bottle yesterday!! This time I washed it with just water, but put the shower head virtually onto my head (I held it with one hand and scrubbed with the other. It doesn't have really low water pressure, but certainly isn't one of those power showers, so I thought getting the water right into where the problem is might help. I also did my vinegar and water rinse as usual on the ends only (left for a few minutes before rinsing), but this time I squirted a bit of conditioner in the mix too. That has helped a lot - I really don't think I can go without conditioner with my frizz (and diluting it seems to have worked quite well), although I will look around for a less chemically one when this one is finished. Ain't Nobody Here
Not boring, nice to know we're not alone . And interesting to hear how others deal with it too!
Eyren
I tried it last summer but gave up after a while (probably too soon). I did however switch to a non-SLES shampoo, same as Claret (Faith in Nature), and I might have a go at going without again this summer. Somehow it's much easier if you're showering rather than having a bath, and I prefer a bath in winter
The Dogmother
If you can get someone to treat you Eyren, try Aveda shampoo - the Shampure one smells divine, they are natural and SLS free. Not cheap at all, but worth it for the smell alone.
Eyren
I think when it comes to shampoo, I'd rather treat myself - I don't think the DH would find it very romantic, no matter how nice it smells! Thanks for the tip, anyway - the big wholefood shop in the city centre has a huge range of toiletries, so I'm bound to find it there. The Dogmother
Not that many places stock Aveda - a local salon does, and some big department stores do, like Debenhams.

Not cheap at all, but worth it for the smell alone. I have been using Aveda for a few years and love it! I am so lucky that a friend gets it for me from the States. Its £17 for a litre bottle of Shampure! Lasts me 2 years Well worth the money IMHO. QVC used to sell it but haven't seen it on there for a while? The Dogmother
Ooo, I wish I was going to the States - that's an excellent price
Eyren
Not that many places stock Aveda - a local salon does, and some big department stores do, like Debenhams. The name looked familiar, but the bottles on their website don't - maybe I'm thinking of another brand with a similar name? I'll look in our big new John Lewis next time I'm in town, then... pelicano
I hated Aveda Shampure - didn't find it any less drying than any other shampoo. My current regime is wash with white vinegar, water and a drop of rosemary essential oil. Then more vinegar, water and a splash of conditioner mixed together just on the ends. It's going quite well, apart from the vinegar smell! I think the reason vinegar helps is because the water here is so hard. Sometimes I still just use water only, but I can't do without conditioner. I still yearn for the days of my hair feeling truly clean, but have to accept that with a very clean scalp comes parched hair! Can I ask anyone who has done this a long time how long it takes for the natural oils to get down to the ends of the hair, or whether that will ever really happen? I am brushing with a natural bristle brush at least once a day to try to distribute them, and my hair is just past shoulder length. In other news, I've been looking into the Oil Cleansing Method for facial cleansing. Sounds promising, in the sense of oil unblocking pores and stopping the over-production of natural oils. Of course there has to be a detox period though, and it doesn't seem to work for everyone. Why is nothing simple?
pelicano
Just to update, my latest regime is freshly squeezed lime juice! It is lovely stuff - has a very similar effect to vinegar, but with a lovely smell. I had really begun to loathe the smell of vinegar, and the smell was starting to build up on my hair. I still haven't ruled out the possibility of switching to occasional shampoo washes yet, but will continue for now.... am 17 weeks in. Ain't Nobody Here
Sounds nice - I might try that . Haven't been using anything other than water but feeling like I should be .
pelicano
What makes you think you should be using something on it? I change my mind daily about mine... I'm still really liking the lime juice, but I do think sooner or later I'm going to cave in and go for a weekly shampoo! What doesn't help is that I need all the damaged ends to go so I know how it will look. At the moment I have a flat section and then a sticky out section from my ears downwards! Ain't Nobody Here
Don't know really . Just feels like water shouldn't be enough on its own even though it does seem to be . (That doesn't really make sense )
Sheilaz
.... What doesn't help is that I need all the damaged ends to go so I know how it will look. At the moment I have a flat section and then a sticky out section from my ears downwards! .. This is exactly how I feel about mine. Although I started non SLS shampoos 14 mths ago, I had also done 10 mths sans shampoo. So, I have 2 years flat, smooth, shiny new growth, to my ears, followed by a longer length of Worzel Gummidge! Still, it is proof that this project works. I can actually feel with my fingertips the exact point where I stopped nasty shampoos! So, like you, I look forward to trimming more ends until I have only "new" hair. Still a couple of years to go then. Personally, I've found that brushing the natural oils down has little effect on the old damaged hair, it's past mending. However, the oils must be working to keep the new hair in good condition, which is logical as they're not being stripped away each wash. Now that I use Faith in Nature shampoo & also use their conditioner, it makes brushing easier. But if you are using just water maybe you won't need it. Lovely to hear about this continued experiment. It seems to be working well for you all at the moment. I might try again for a while in the summer if life is less stressful... ANH, if you are managing well with just water I should keep it up. Louise, Merryn & Anne all had great results with water alone.
pelicano
Yes, I'm similar, in that I haven't used an SLS shampoo for about 18 months, and am several months into the 'no poo plan. I've got years of damaged hair to grow out though! Also, going SLS -free never really helped me that much anyway. I'm 2 days into the oil cleansing method for my skin, and I'm really liking the results so far (early days though!) My skin used to feel like an oil slick but is started to feel much more balanced. I think I've already put up a link, but if not, try: www.theoilcleansingmethod.com
Guest
I did a vinegar rinse yesterday and it was immediately familiar! My hair was not as wet as it is with shampoo. When it had dried, it once again looked clean but didn't feel it. That familiar 'thickness' was there. My head was feeling itchy and it was only 5 days since the last shampoo. i am really reluctant to start using shampoo more than once a week, but couldn't stand the itchiness. (Also always slightly concerned about itchiness, in case I've caught something ) There's no itching now though and my hair will go a little longer until it needs shampooing. That'll feel good! pelicano
I am really off vinegar now - I find it doesn't help my scalp (despite all those websites saying it's the best thing for dandruff), and it stinks. Lime juice gives me the effects of vinegar but without the stink, and also helps my scalp. I know what you mean about thickness though. I crave the feeling of light clean hair (at the scalp). I even find myself looking at people on TV in hair-envy!
myles
Just a quick hello, I've just clocked up two years poo free and things are good. I mostly wash with water and only use lemon juice maybe once a fortnight ish. My hair is very seasonal, seems to be dirtier in spring and autumn, but perhaps it was like that before and I dont remember. For those of you thinking of starting, I didn't find it easy and my hair took along time to ajust a good 9 months. But I will never go back to shampoo, my hairs is definitly in better condition, feels softer, I save alot of money and I get a kick everytime I walk past the shampoo in the suppermarket Anne
pelicano
Thanks v much for the update, myles! When you say it took a good 9 months to adjust, do you mean that you were still quite greasy before 9 months? This gives me hope to continue as, although I'm not excessively greasy, I could do with less greasiness!
