Rhapsody
I read chelsea's thread about shopping at M&S but didnt want to hijack- *rant alert* My gripe about M&S (or any other big supermarket) at Xmas is the women who insist on taking their completely useless husbands with them. You've all seen him this time of year, he stands with his trolley on permanent pause/standby in the middle of the aisles so no-one can get past. Every so often their wife comes back with some groceries and they have a blistering row about how much this is all costing. Then he moves about 2 ft along, oblivious to all the people backed up behind him and goes back into a coma. If I had my way there would be a sign by the door next to the one that says 'No Dogs Except Guide Dogs' saying 'No Husbands Except Those Who Go Shopping During The Rest of The Year' I have never heard so much publicly-aired marital strife as I heard on Thursday, I giggled all the way round the shop. Best one was a tiny sweet-looking grey-haired grandma who turned to her beige-clad spouse and spat "If you tell me one more time this is all cheaper at Tesco's I'll shove this pudding up your ungrateful ****
chelsea
I know exactly what you mean. What REALLY gets my goat is people who decide to have a long conversation in the middle of the aisle OR ditherers - cant stand them - people who stand in front of the stuff you want thinking and dithering and pondering.... why dont they just pick it up and put it in the trolley!! Ain't Nobody Here
Like to have seen her try . This isn't really M&S related but my pet hate is people who take an item off the shelves then somehow decide, some time later, that they don't want it and just shove it back on the shelf they happen to be beside . Don't take the blinking thing in the first place or at least have the decency to put it back in the right place .
Guest
what I find immensely irritating is, if I am pondering about what to buy or scanning the shelves for something I can't find (or dithering as Chelsea calls it ) and someone comes and stands right between you and what you were looking at! At 6 foot 1", surely I'm not invisible!?
chelsea
and someone comes and stands right between you and what you were looking at! im guilty of this I do say "excuse me" though! but im one of these "in and out, that'll do" and out of the shop as quickly as possible people, I hate shopping. Sorry V but this made me larf. I don't allow things to irritate me unless they directly affect me otherwise I'd be neurotic! What do you mean I already am??? It's those people who do it without even acknowledging your existence and then they just stand there! People who say 'excuse me' and grab something quickly don't bother me at all. I do get a bit fed up of being asked to pass people things from high shelves too, I don't work here!!!??? And they don't even say please or thank you, "scuse me love, can you just pass me them sausages?" I have to bite my tongue or I'd blurt out "What do you say?" Guest
apropos of aisles, Morrisons are the worst as their aisle layout is bizarre, the aisles just don't line up!? What I mean is, you can't walk from one side of the store to the other in a straight line, the aisles are staggered and it confuses me! I tend to avoid Morrisons

Cate in NZ
My supermarket rant, and M&S is every bit as bad as the rest of them, but why on earth do they put fruit and veg as your first point of call when you enter the place. I rarely buy my f & v from supermarkets any more, not least because I got so fed up of it going in first and then getting squashed beyond belief by the tinned goods and washing powder etc that came later, and weigh so much more. It used to frustrate me so much that I simply stopped getting fresh produce from the supermarkets, now I just use them for the staples, toilet paper and the like Ditherers in supermarkets wind me up too, especially those that meet friends so draw their trolleys up alongside each other and settle in for a nice long chatter, whilst completely blocking the aisle . Because I tend only to go for a relatively short list of things I can be very single minded, go in, get what I want and out again, so I'm not particularly tolerant of the ditherers. That said, the market yesterday was worse, I bought loads of veg and you know heavy that can be ..........then I had to lug it all back to the car. The bags were getting heavier with every step and people kept suddenly stopping or dawdling in front of me . At least you get a trolley in the supermarket, so no risk of bags cutting off all circulation in the fingers, nor shoulder ache

Egluntyne
The employees who are filling up the delivery service orders get on my wick too. they stand around gassing and block the aisles with their extra wide trolleys.

'Tis a merchandising trick If you look at the lighting and colours of the veg and fruit section you will see that they try and make it look like sunlight the colours are all green and yellow. Supposed to make the customers feel happy as soon as they step into the store.. ergo they will buy more I never buy veg and fruit in supermarkets Tessa

Leisure WHAT is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare?— No time to stand beneath the boughs, And stare as long as sheep and cows: No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass: No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night: No time to turn at Beauty's glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance: No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began? A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. W. H. Davies

I try and do as much as poss on line but you can't get the 'whoops' bargains on line so, as we're on a budget now, I have to brave the supermarket. I hate it with a passion, too many single minded people 'on a mission' I like to have a good old root around for bargains and I don't always know where things are so I do sometimes dither but I don't stand around blocking aisles, oblivious to other people. I have to sit down while DH packs the bags, as I can't stand for long without getting exhausted, but the benches in the supermarket seem to be a meeting place for pensioners, bless 'em. Could be worse, they could be chatting in the aisles and that just wouldn't do, would it!
Cate in NZ
I think it's all about showing courtesy towards others, rather than the rights and wrongs of how and when to shop. If you choose to shop slowly and use the experience as a social event then I am absolutely not out to criticise, in fact in many ways I envy you. But it's also tolerance of each others lifestyles. I'm a working Mum with a home to run, and 2 children who need me. So for me shopping is a chore, to be planned in advance and got over and done with as quickly as possible. I've got many other competing demands on my time, and I want to devote much, much more of my time to my home, family and friends. So, please, shop at whatever speed you choose...........but don't block up the aisles for a chat, just make a little bit of a gap for those of us who are on a mission to get the job done just as fast as we possibly can. Oh, and I frequently bump into friends in the supermarket, hard not to really, and I never, ever block the aisles, even if I want to chat

Snowy
Poet, I had to laugh at you being asked to reach things from the top shelf! I have the opposite problem - a whole foot shorter than you! I can never reach things of the top shelves and have been known to dump a trolley full of shopping and walk out in sheer frustration because I couldn't reach something (don't do that often I hasten to add!) Amazing how many people happily watch you jumping up and down trying to grab something

I 'dither' also because I'm ill and can't move fast. When I said people who rush around wind me up, that wasn't true it was just a reaction to the criticism of 'ditherers'. I was jumping to their (our) defence because I know what it's like to feel lost in a supermarket and not know what you want or where to find it. I would like to think I'm courteous to people at all times, I fetch things down for people from high shelves without so much as a by your leave after all! Guest
Poet, I had to laugh at you being asked to reach things from the top shelf! my LSH is 5 foot 4" so we have all angles covered! It's the people that ask you but don't say please or thank you that I find rude, still, it's all good karma. I hope!
