I know when I did some research on organic veggie boxes they came out the most expensive, other than that no experience I am afraid. Willow Posted January 22, 2008 Share Posted January 22, 2008 I ordered a Christmas veg box from them - it was rather expensive and I was disappointed with some of the contents and they haven't collected the packaging yet ! When I contacted them about the potatoes their customer services person emailed me basically indicating my expectations were wrong because I was used to GM potatoes ! Most of the stuff had perished within a few days. It made us wary of trying another box scheme but we've been with Riverford for months now and they're brilliant. My friends used to farm East Fingle Farm (their near neighbours) and when i mentioned to them i was going to get ducks they took me up to Higher Fingle to chat to their neighbours. The ducks were in a barn when i was there (though had a fair amount of space) Apparantly they do go out but i didn't see where or how often. Not at all - I love going up to our village butchers here. In our last house, the butcher shut down about 3 days after we moved in, but the butchers here is fantastic - a real focal point in the village, along with the Post Office. It's so nice to buy meat from well-trained, knowledgable people, who are passionate about their trade, and able to advise on cooking their products. I haven't been cooking properly for that long, too many hours at work so I love all this shopping for good produce and cooking it from scratch. Can't wait for the first proper fruit and veg from our garden. I went into Morrisons not long ago and asked the fishmonger how to cook a particular piece of fish and he grunted, pointed to a chart on the wall and walked off! Not what they have you believe on the adverts, with the friendly fishmonger only too willng to give advice, yeah right! I'm going to do my best to avoid supermarkets wherever possible this year. missuscluck Posted January 22, 2008 Share Posted January 22, 2008 I have wondered about using a veg box scheme, but all things considered have decided to go to the green grocers every week instead. I am feeling good about my new years resouloutions so far. I am using the butchers/greengrocers/aldi and waitrose for supermarket essentials. All of which are on my route home from work so I am not doing unneccesary road miles either. I have invested in a bread maker and I am baking all out own bread too. I havent set foot in Tesco/morrisons or Asda for weeks. To be honest Im not spending any more money either but what we have had is of a far better quality. I too was concerned about the quality and longevity of the veg and also I just dont have the head space to think of clever ways to use the veg that I have been sent. Overall we eat a lot of fruit too and it just works out too expensive. I spend about £12.00 a week on fruit and veg at the green grocers and what I buy for the week seems to stay fresh. Problem for me would be that I tend to 'feel like eating carrots tonight' and the thought of having to eat broccolli instead because it needs using up just doesn't appeal. Krysia Posted January 22, 2008 Share Posted January 22, 2008 Just to add my own experience, I too tried Abel and cole once. the veg although organic or almost (they also help farmers who are converting to organic but not yet allowed to be called organic until x number of years is up) it was what I would call poor quality.
