motherhen
I do cook it, but not very often. I'm trying to do it once a week. My problem is I don't know what to buy (what cuts to ask for etc.) so I am now ordering a box of meat once a month, so that i don't have that problem! If you can find that increasingly rare thing called a real butcher near you, then just go in the shop on a quiet day (not Sat morning, although a queue then will suggest it's a good shop) and tell him what you want to cook, and what you like in meat and ask his advice. The Hugh FW book on meat is also very good on explaining all the different cuts
Guest
Thank you Jane. I've tried to locate a good, organic butcher, but didn't find one. My first experience of asking for advice was so awful, that I have opted for the easy method. After a while, I may learn what to ask for! Cate in NZ
Hi Ginette, we've done suprisingly well being veggie, found it a lot easier than I expected, especially since I discovered veggie bacon in my local Waitrose Daughter is considering remaining veggie, but wants to join in with our big easter Sunday roast dinner. After that who knows
Lesley
The first time I found veggie bacon years ago, I was so thrilled. Then son walked in and I said guess what I've just had - waving the frying pan under his nose.............. His reply.......... "Soya" I thought it smelled just like bacon and I really enjoyed it. Guest
The family had roast beef today which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I had some smoked haddock, which was equally delicious. (I am a fish-eating vegetarian, I think that's called demi-vegetarianism. That is because sometimes I like to be able to cook something quick and simple, otherwise I wouldn't be eating fish either.) Especially delicious were the boiled eggs for breakfast. So yummy and I have so missed them! And I have to admit that the Creme Eggs were just as scrummy as ever. Guest
An update: A month on from Easter and we have changed our eating in a few ways as a result of our 'vegan' period. These are the things that we have kept on: I have Alpro soya yoghurt now instead of 'real' yoghurt. OH prefers his muesli with apple juice, not milk. OH no longer has milk in coffee. I haven't bought 'chocolate biscuits' (kit-kats, tunnock, penguins etc) for the children since February and I am still making Flapjacks and rice crispie cakes instead. I only buy PURE margarine. We use half the milk we used to. OH lost a stone in weight. I didn't! I'm really pleased that we have discovered through necessity some things which we want to adopt as part of our normal diet. Cate in NZ
Thanks for the update Ginnette, it's good to hear that it was a valuable experience as well as a Lenten discipline and that you've carried some of the changes with you
Guest
So are you going to update your Rant thread Kate? I'm really anxious to hear how you got on!
Popcorn
ALPRO SOYA YOGURT! I live on it. Love it, love it, love it. Trouble is, I buy the four packs and I eat them all within 2 days. No self control
Guest
It's better for you than four bars of chocolate though! I like the unflavoured pots (500ml)
