The_smeeeths
Has anyone ever grown rhubarb in a large pot? Thought I would save space by planting in a really large pot but wondered if it will grow? I would value anyones advise on this.
Lesley-Jean
Needs rich compost/soil and lots of water
The Dogmother
Another rhubarb question - I have a couple of large crowns, which haven't done so well over the last couple of years. They are planted under a large tree. Is it ok to move them at this time of year?
Lesley-Jean
Dig them up and leave on the surface to frost. Divide and replant, they should do well. My poor Rhubarb hasn't had that treatment for years.
The_smeeeths
will chicken poo do ok for compost?
Lesley-Jean
It is OK for veg. but too strong for flowers. It can be added to the compost bin.
The_smeeeths
Oh dear I am asking lots of stupid questions here! But can I just shovel it into the soil or do you have to compost it first? I am a complete novice when it comes to anything green (except eyeshadow!) I am determined to be the next felicity kendal aka good life so please forgive the onslought of questions
Lesley-Jean
I think composting is the best thing to do with chicken poo. Add to plenty of veg waste some fiberous material like straw. I bung some of the bark chips in as well to keep the compost 'open'. Make sure it is moist too.
Deb Dav
Just another quick question on this thread as I would like to grow rhubarb plus gooseberries for good old fashioned crumbles. Are the leaves of rhubarb poisonous - as I am sure I heard that they are somewhere

clare*
I planted rhubarb in a pot last year. I did not pick any as I was told for the first year I should leave it to make it stronger for the next year. I have been chucking the odd bit of poo on it now and again and it seems to be growing really well so far this year.
Lesley-Jean
Some people put custard on their rhubarb, but we put horse manure on ours
N&J
I have to say i am struggling with rhubarb this year - i have got 2 small crowns from the GC and these have both died, don't know what I have done wrong. Yet the Father in law has given me one and that is doiing fine!
