Right Girls - Hair washing and not doing it with shampoo

Recommended Posts

Sorry you are feeling so poorly today Sheila. :( Keep warm, have a cup of tea and be kind to yourself. It's difficult when you are such a doer (always on the go!), but sometimes you have to give your body a fighting chance and do very little. Maybe just a few posts on the forum should be the order of the day today and everything else can wait until you feel stronger.

I'm sorry to hear you're ill Sheila. Look after yourself and don't worry about your hair. We can't give up now, we could be half way there!

I did oatmeal on Saturday and Sunday  but my hair looks fine today and I am leaving the rinse until tomorrow :)

Hope you are feeling better soon Sheila I'll put the kettle on for a change

Well I am three weeks tomorrow and it is all still fine the thing I find most odd is that my hair has no smell at all usually you have the lingering shampoo smell abut now there is absolutely nothing

I am till using a smidge of conditioner on the ends and it is not keeping the smell of that either :?

Hope you get well soon Sheila!!

Well I will be two weeks tomorrow and my hair is looking ok although it feels horrid.

Its strange you should mention smell Louise, I spent most of the weekend at my mums house who is a smoker and usually I would need to give my hair a good wash to get the smell out. Today, it doesn't smell at all and I haven't rinsed it or anything yet. :D

:oops::oops::oops::oops:

Sorry, girls. I lasted till 6:30 last night, and I just couldn't take it any longer. Sent Chookiehubbie out for a new bottle of shampoo (I'd thrown the last bottle out), and I washed it.

One good thing to come out of it, though, was that I have discovered that I don't need to wash it every day - I was rinsing it with just water then blowdrying it, and for the first few days it didn't look too bad, so in future I will severely cut back on the washing, and maybe in the summer, when it is a bit longer and can be tied back, or hidden properly under a hat, I will give it another go.

:oops::oops::oops::oops:

Yes, I realise I am a pathetic failure.......

Don't worry Shona. Everyone who has tried this has learnt something from it. So we're all benefitting!

Day 29 for me - I can't believe I've got so far! :):)

Oh Shona, I seem to have had exactly the same experience as you. I have washed mine too although I now realise this doesn't have to be every day as before. I'm full of admiration for all the girls still sticking to it. Well done and keep us posted! :D8)

I'll get DH to take a photo - can't promise when, as right now we're trying to get a wifi router onto this pc so I can use my laptop, and a wifi dongle for DH for his birthday (today) so I can surf in the garden when it's sunny and not run the leviathan all the time, and he won't feel left out.

I noticed the lack of smoke smell too, very early on.

As to the rest - it'll get better, girls, I promise you!

One other thing I notice - you know the smell of fresh washing? If someone comes in from outside on a windy day you get it too? Well, your hair will start to collect that smell too! It's gorgeous!

(((hugs))) sheila - hope you feel better soon!

Don't be embarrassed or feel you have failed. I am now washing my hair less often, with less shampoo, so that's a step in the right direction. I might try again in the summer, but even if I don't, I reckon I am using at least 2/3 less shampoo, so that's got to be good for the environment. (and my money)

Head up! :D

Rinsed my hair in vinegar and warm water again this morning. I don't know how much longer I can face doing this though. It gets in my eyes and stings, it gets in my mouth and I don't like the taste and I breathe it up my nose as well. Yuk! Yuk! Yuk!:(

Hair is now dry and looking really dirty. It's like I've gone back to the early days again! I'll leave it till tomorrow but then may do oatmeal to make it look a bit better! It feels clean though. :)

i can't get the hang of the vinegar rinse, i don't know what i am doing wrong, but even washing my hair with pure water makes it look better than the vinegar! i ahve not spent 2 weeks with permanently greasy-wet looking hair, and the only thing that changed it was the bicarb. although maybe it is because i am washing my hair upside down? maybe if i washed it standing up my under-hair woiuld still be greasy, and top coat nice... luckily someone is finally coming to fix my shower thur-fri... will try to stick with the no shampoo thing though would make my life so much easier in the long run. luckily i work in a kitchen and am required to put my hair up and under a hat. co-workers are finding it a bit strange that i show up to work with the hat already on, but compared to keeping pet chickens, that is really nothing :D

I have always washed my hair standing up in the shower and it is the top of my head which is greasy! So that theory doesn't work, Spott! I mustn't forget the bicarb treatment.

How are you Sheila? I hope you aren't feeling too unwell. :(

I need some reassurance! Please!

My hair is really greasy looking again today, worse than yesterday. It probably looks as if I haven't washed it for 4 weeks! :( Anne, are you still there? What lies ahead for me? Grease for the next 4 weeks?

I will probably leave it up today and do oatmeal tomorrow. HappyMama was certainly right though. This is week 5 and it is really bad! :(

:D I'm just about alive, wasn't so sure yesterday, thanks for kind enquiries. My hair therefore looked atrocious, and I couldn't wait to hopefully wake up a bit better today, and give it the "I'm better now" hair wash, an important part of feeling well.

So, thought I might give in, as rinsing followed by scraggy hair wasn't going to make me feel good. Last night, I read parts of the thread again. Torn between giving vinegar another try, or PM'ing Ginette and apologising for falling by the wayside, then crawling into a corner, that's what I felt like. Then, I looked at the link on page ..34?..all about the non-washing, and decided to try the baking soda.

So, this morning the plan was baking soda (I used baking powder) and see how it was. If really grotty still, rinse with vinegar, but not unless needed. If still bad, give up!

HURRAY! I had another oatmeal-like experience!

Everyone, do try the baking soda, it's taken out all the extra grease & dirt, and my hair looks better than usual! I'm so impressed.

Read about it carefully, don't use too much. Overuse may lighten or over dry the hair. For me, it has brought out the natural colour that I haven't seen for a month, and it shines, which it hasn't since 1959.

I only rubbed it into the top part of my hair, and near the ears, as the longer part always used to be too dry. Perfect! Do try it.

Phew, I'm still in.

Ginette, I'm no good for reassurance (I wimped out on day 5 or 6  ), but you simply can't give up now...... you've come so far and been so inspirational for the rest of us. Happymama did say that this was the worst bit..... but it must been that you're nearly there, the overtreated and stimulated scalp and sebum glands launching their final fight back :?

Grab your oatmeal 8) , scrunchie and a hat if it's that bad :? ..... you can get through this. Go girl :D

I've not seen Myles or Anne on for a few days, maybe they're enjoying an Easter break, but Sheila's been around today, and she's just fab at reassurance and sensible advice :D

Gee, thanks guys! :D You're all so wonderfully supportive. :D:D

I will try baking soda tomorrow (no time today!).

Sheila, can I just confirm you used baking powder? I don't want to get it wrong. Maybe it's the same thing, I just wouldn't know!

I'm glad to hear you're feeling a bit better today. It must be really hard not doing the shower/hairwash thing after you've been ill. It always helps you to feel better doesn't it? I'm so glad you didn't give up. :):)

 Phew, I thought you'd gone off & used shampoo before seeing my posting.

Well, in the link it says baking soda, but, staring in the cupboard at midnight, I couldn't htink what I needed. Did it mean bicarb, or something that I don't have?

I decided that Baking powder would just have to do, but if you have something called baking soda that would be right!

Anyway, it's fab....but don't use too much, or over any dry bits!

1 tblsp to 1 cup warm water, mix & use as a liquid.
