Tara123
I've just been down to the woods and picked up some large tree branches to put in the run (already had fallen onto the floor first). They have some sort of fungus on them that has gone hard, so not fresh fungi. Do you think it would be OK to leave it on there, or could it be harmful to my girls? If they lived on a farm free ranging then I'm sure they would be some sort of wood pile lying around with fungi on it. So I'm sure it wouldn't do them any harm, but I just want to check with you knowledgeable peeps first UPDATE: Well I s"Ooops, word censored!"ed off most of the fungus stuff but couldn't get it all off, its old fungus as it had dried out and was hard. Put the branches in the run and they discovered the moss that was growing on it and have devoured that and pecked at the fungus stuff too So I hope it's alright otherwise I'm going to have some very poorly chooks soon Edited March 4, 2008 by Guest
Hen Watch
No idea but mine manage not to eat the mushroom typethings growing in my lawn. I put logs I collect from the woods in the run for them to jump on. I did the same as you, got a branch about 1inch dia and poked it through the eglu run bars, tied it with string, and they love to just sit on it and perch. Eyren
I wouldn't worry too much. Most of the poisonous fungi (and there are really only a few of those) are the "toadstool" variety - the hard brackety ones that grow on dead and dying wood are mostly just inedible. chelsea
hens are quite clever they seem to know what is good for them and what is not, im sure they wont even give it a second glance - so dont worry about it.
Egluntyne
Mine ignore the toadstools in our garden. They do seem to have a radar for things that will not do them any good.
