cat pregnant...

Recommended Posts

oh, hello! Right. First things first, when did she meet her boyfriend? Gestation periods in cats can vary according to breed, but if she's a moggy, it will be 63 days, or nine weeks after she conceived. Try and remember when she was yowly and rolling around a lot if you didn't see/hear it happen. You can feel the kittens moving for a few weeks before birth, Cleo has at least a week to go, probably two and we've been feeling them for a couple of weeks now.

You should put her onto kitten food for the last part of her pregnancy and while she's nursing, as she will need much more nutrition than normal, and she will drink tons as well. This is quite important, as undernourished kittens can be stillborn.

One of the signs of labour can be loss of appetite and being very thirsty, so keep an eye out for that. You might feel that her milk comes in a day or so before hand as well. When she is about to give birth, you will hopefully notice a sort of gunky mucus around her business end and she will almost certainly manage without your help from that point onwards, but it's worth hanging around if she wants you.

Size has nothing to do with how many kittens she might have - I though Evie was having hundreds and she had four fat kittens, and I thought Cleo only had one or two, and she actually had five, although only two lived.

There's a lot of information on how to try and revive kittens who aren't breathing, which you might want to look at, but you shouldn't need it if your girl is healthy and calm during the birth. If you see a lot of blood (and I mean quite a bit, not pinky liquid, but say more than a couple of large table spoons worth) you should get her to a vet.

Being tired and wanting to be near you is common in cat pregnancy, I love it when my girls are pregnant, as they want to sit on me and sleep the whole time. evie tried to give birth on my knee, but I did have to draw the line there - she of course ruined my duvet instead. Make sure you have a box or a basket lined with newspaper and old towels/bedding/blankets for her, in a nice warm place where she feels comfortable. Both of mine gave birth in my bedroom, and we moved them to the living room when the kittens were a couple of weeks old, but we now have them ensconced in a spare room. Cleo is making noises about giving birth in the towel hamper - at least they're washable at 90 degrees!

I'd be happy to provide any info you might need, just ask away!
