Our Chooks Live on Webcam!!

Recommended Posts

they were busy eating, now i've seen a young girl come out and they are running down the run towards me!!:lol:

this camera thing is 8)

Hi, you mentioned in your previous post that you were going to get a cctv camera. You can also get a convertor for these to convert the stream to PC format and then you could view this over the internet also. Great for checking in on the chooks when away!

I got mine from maplin electronics, it is a Wireless IP Webcam.

http://www.maplin.co.uk

search for wireless Internet Camera and look for the SOHO Internet camera priced at £79.

It is supposed to be for indoor use only, but I figured that it is kind of indoors when mounted in the eglu. It comes with a really good mounting bracket that I screwed to the roosting bars. It also has the ability to turn off the flashing LEDs so as not to annoy the chooks(especially if on at night).

If you don't have a Maplin nearby, you can order from them over the internet or they are available elsewhere. If you want to get an internet camera, it is important to make sure it supports DDNS. Very techie reason for this. If you want help getting it all working and up and running on the net, just let me know, I'd be very happy to guide you through the process.

You sure are no "techno-numpty" . In fact, you are certainly an "untechnonumpty" . That's so clever 8) .

Thanks. I work for an internet software company and kind of have to learn this stuff to keep a roof over mine and the chooks heads. It was good fun setting this up.

Next project "underwater fish cam for the tropical fish tank!", keeps me busy so the wife doesn't ask me to decorate! if I do start work on "Underwater Fish Cam" the wife is likely to have me taken away by men in white coats

Just been watching your girls and feel like I've met you  . Your daughter (?), then you came to speak to the girls - I felt like shouting "HELLO! I'M IN HERE!". And I spotted your wife in the background too! (You'd better watch what you do in your garden, you never know who might be watching :lol: .)

Yes, must make sure we don't get up to any mischief in view of the camera! When I go out to check for eggs etc. I always wonder if someone might be watching.

Hi,

Great setup! I like the idea of being able to see them when you're away.

I was wondering how you get power to the camera though, does it use batteries? Also, could you please post a photo to show the camera in it's position. I'm thinking of doing the same with my chooks! :D

Hi ya,

The camera is connected to the mains, via a hole drilled through the garage wall. The camera is fixed to the the roosting bars of the eglu and the cable goes out through the eggport door. Cable is not very thick so doesn't affect use of the eggport in anyway.

Will ask OH to post pic on here of set up. It's quite close to the door exit just inside the eglu.

Get those chickens back inside - there's nothing to watch :shameonu::lol: .

With pleasure, its hammering down out there so best they are back in the run and me back in the house in the warmth with a beer.

I have been asked by a few people to take photos of the camera position and explain how to set this up. I have taken the photos (think someone was waving down the camera as I took them  ) and will put together some real quick instructions tonight on what is needed to get this up and running. I'll try to get something posted tonight and then will try to spend some time fleshing out the instructions with more details later (as it can be a bit technical in places!).

For anyone who would like to get the camera up and running on the internet, I would be very happy to make the job easier by allowing you to send the camera images to my site. I can easily change my site to have a list of webcams from other omleters for people to click and view.

let me know if you'd be interested in this. This would save you all the hassle of registering a domain name and setting up a website (this is easy for me as I work in the industry and have a small web hosting business).

Glad everyone is enjoying the ChookCam! :D:D

Hello all,

I have been asked for photo's and instructions to help others get their very own chookcam up and running.

I have put together some very rough instructions, sorry they are rough and also a bit techie in places. I'll try to improve on them later.

You can get the instructions and photo's by clicking on the link below:-

ChookCam Howto Instructions

Hope you find this useful. :D

Also,

Here are a couple of photo's I took earlier today while the chooks were free-ranging. I was trying to plant some chicken proof plants in the garden, they seemed to see this as an opportunity to go worm hunting!

Funny Chickens!

P.S. The chooks are in bed asleep now, I have to let them go off air til tomorrow morning, these celebrity chooks need their rest!

I think I'll try to put one in a wooden bird box thing on a tree and have it pointing down on their run. I'm not so keen on having the camera in the eglu as my chooks have a tendancy to poo EVERYWHERE in the eglu and I fear it might be spoilt somewhat!

 Sensible idea, I don't think the camera will take that much battering. Fortunately my girls seem to always huddle together near the nest box at the back of the eglu. They do have a tendancy to rush out in the morning and knock the camera off position :!: I image a bird box would work well.
