Trefoilhens
My little hen, 2 years old, stopped laying 2 months ago during a moult. While cleaning out the eglu I found a 4 inch long 'rubbery' item in the tray. I cut through it and can only describe it as a multi-layered (9 layers) hollow flat egg. Has anyone come across anything like it? We had wrinkley egg shells before the moult.
Egluntyne
Sometimes they shed the lining of their laying tackle and it can look a bit sinister and alarming.....rather like like cooked chicken! For some reason it is known as a "lash"....old country word. As long as she is eating and drinking it is probably nothing to worry about. Once her feathers have regrown she will start to lay again in all likelihood.

chanters
No worries, there were cautions in place, I just took them a touch too lightly!
HENthusiastic
Is it really called a lash or is that an omlettere word? Don't want to go embarassing myself! One of my girls passed / laid ?? a lash this morning! It didnt look as awful as the piccis. It was actually quite egg shaped and sized! chanters
Yep that is the real name for it. Are you sure it wasn't just a softie that you found this morning?
HENthusiastic
HIya. No it definitely wasn't an egg. I pulled it apart a bit to see exactly what it was, before I started searching omlet for answers! It was a solid rubbery thing which was kind of in layers. My girls have laid a few softies so I'm famlier with them. It wasn't properly egg shaped, just more oval and smooth than the grim looking thing in the picture.
