Ziggy
The ex-batts are queueing to get in the eglu, and laying... And they're doing it in the nesting box!!!! I was so surprised, they seem to know exactly what to do... there is one egg in there, and more chooks getting in there, didn't want to disturb them too much so waiting for them to be all out of the eglu in the run to check... I didn't expect them to lay in the nesting box!!!

Suzie
Mine too - only one egg so far and also in the nesting box. I'm really pround of them. Especially as it means that they went back into the eglu after I let them out into the run this morning to use the nesting box. Not quite so happy that they've manged to knock their grub off the side of the run and litter their food all over the floor. Will need to get some wire to attach it on with and I don't want to encourage rats. I'm so pleased about my egg though - it's my first ever egg! I did an egg dance round the garden! Egluntyne
They are showing their gratitude to you for liberating them. Mine have laid every day since they arrived.

Exactly the same here , we must be having identical conversations in your house and mine this morning... we commented on how lovely it was that they went back in after being let out... we've had two eggs so far, out of the three chooks, but all three have wandered in and out of the eglu... aren't they wonderful?? Their floor too is covered in mash... they knocked the grub out yesterday evening... I thought at least for the first day it spreads the food around so no bullying to get to it, but to be honest there hasn't been any obvious sign of aggression, they seem pleased and happy... Suzie
Only one egg so far but that's more than I expected. We did stuggle to get them in last night though so we've bought a torch (ours is broken) and hope that that will lure them in this evening. Ziggy
I'm curious to see if they will go in by themselves this evening, as they went in by themselves to lay and explore... didn't think of trying the torch thing... will do tonight if they don't go in by themselves... Yesterday I sent my 8 year old in the eglu run to pick them up and put them to bed...
Suzie
We tried everything last night (didn't think about borrowing a friends child though) including a gentle poke with a broom and in the end we had to pick them out of the run and pop them through the egg port. I really don't want to do that every night though as it was a little stressful for them. I'm hoping tonight will be easier Hope you enjoy your day with your chooks. MedusA
Congratulations to you both (Ziggy and Suzie) on getting your ex-batts and the eggs are a bonus of course. I found it very encouraging, that there are rescues near Brum. I do want some ex-batts eventually myself. It's great to read people's stories on here. Suzie
The rehoming centre itself is just north of coventry just off the A45. MedusA you're not far from me at all as we're just on the edge of Sutton and Erdington. The girls look happier and less skittish today and I think Pink will be the bossy one. She is the most threadbare of all the chooks and apparently it's this one that is often the bossiest as she's always had to fight for her food. I can definately see different personalities already. It will be interesting to see if that changes over time.
MedusA
I hadn't noticed you were local, Suzie. There are quite a few of us around the Erdington/Sutton Coldfield Area. Maybe we should have a meet-up sometime? Your girls sound lovely.
Suzie
It would be nice to have a meet up. Our clever girlies have laid another egg and in the nestbox too. They were struggling to get in and out of the eglu, but seem happy to go in and out now. Hopefully bed time will be easier now. We're on the flight path and the noise from the aeroplanes is really confusing them. They keep looking up to the sky to see what is making the noise. It's very funny to watch Edited April 27, 2008 by Guest
Ziggy
Bless them... maybe they wonder how that great big noisy chook got up there!! It's lovely to hear of them all doing so well... I keep going to look at ours and beaming at them and the way they are wandering around the run and in and out of the eglu...
Ziggy
5 eggs today... three from the new girls, 2 from Mac and Nugget... I am very impressed with how the new girls are doing... they seem much more 'with it' than I expected... Still worrying about them for all kinds of reasons though, nearly counting their feathers for fear of them picking on each other, and so on...
