LJ's Chooks

Don't turn your nose up!

Recommended Posts

After reading how strawberries (+ tops) seem to hit the spot, I bought some from the market - if it is possible for hens to look annoyed/disgusted - my four did - the realisation of what I was offering them really didn't make them happy.

They also petrified of corn on the cob BUT love it if I painstaking remove it from the cob.

Meal worms are just absolutely the best thing in the world mixed with bit of corn and meal/warm water.

Haven't tried grapes/raisins yet - but parsley is a definate no-no

MIne adore pasta - spaghetti worms are huge fun!!!

Also any salad, broccoli and sweetcorn has gone down well. I made up a porridge of mash, bran and sweetcorn and they loved it.

They also ate some M&Ms.....don't ask!!!! - my son swears they "fell in the run by accident"!!!!

Cooked rice - this was the only food which made Dora go, "gA gA gA!" honestly, my children even say, "Dora's doing her rice song!" because when she sees her blue bowl being carried over she just knows it's rice!

A couple of days ago I got them some live mealworms though, and Dora did her 'rice song' for them too!

Oh, and any stolen savoy cabbage from my small veg patch makes them go crazy.

My first two girls I ever had, Gertie and Flo, would pretty much each ANYTHING you gave them.

Current two go mad for corn, sweetcorn and especially love corn on the cob hung from a string in their run! Also, mealworms, bread, pasta, and general vegetable s"Ooops, word censored!"s. They seem to not like root vegs though?! And they won't touch apples.

As for marmite, my hens used to love it. It's supposed to calm them down a bit I believe - and packed full of B vitamins as was said earlier!!

Just for the record, B vitamins are good for a multitude of things, but particularly good for you if you have them while you're going through a stressful time (they can even help someone through depression!). Just a tip there  I took a B vitamin supplement for a while when I was going through a really stressy time, and it really really calmed me down!

one question about all this food - do chickens chew ??? I gave mine grapes last night, and some seemed to go down whole (they snatched them from me, I normally break them into bits). I am a bit worried they will choke ??

They don't chew, they have no teeth, but they don't even seem to 'gum it'!! (if you know what I mean :? ).

Mine just wolf grapes down whole, I used to cut them up but now I don't bother. I always think they will choke when they eat worms - they are so long - but they just seem to disappear down the beak as if my magic!!

:D
