Don't turn your nose up!

Or should that be beak!!!

Yep I thought i was giving them a treat, but oh no, not our chooks, they appear not to like raisins!!! Unless their treats are sweetcorn or grapes they are not interested.

Chickens are the funniest things... do you think Asda will take back the 3 value bags of raisins i've just bought and swap then for green giant?

It's strange what our girls will and won't eat :? :?

Someone said their chooks don't like tomatoes :shock: My girls go crazy for a tomato and jump up trying to get them out of their treat bowl whilst you're trying to put the bowl on the ground :D:D

Wait a while and they'll probably like raisins, my girls always pick the raisins out of their chookie porridge first :D:D

I tried raisins but they weren't interested (OH suggested soaking in water for a while to soften them up). 2 of them love grapes, no-one likes sweetcorn, only one will eat a seed mix and the quartered apple only got eaten 5 days later when it was discovered very brown in the flower border while free ranging. But they all loved pellet porridge. Henwatch serves it with yogurt, bokashi bran and garlic powder - yummy

Perhaps we should write a recipe book of foods for chickens to give new owners an idea of what they like and for experienced owners to share new food combinations

Chickaboo,

You spoil them  Just like the rest of us

Ours love anything except raw broccoli. Their favourites are toast soaked in water and melon seeds.

I buy the girls a cabbage whenever I go shopping and have started buying melon every week as my son loves it and the chickens always get at least a quarter... but hubby doesn't know

mine LOVE sweetcorn, so much so it's all gone, but they have been buk buking for more (chance would be a fine thing) Sugar runs up and down the run seeing off blackbirds!

They love raisins, corn, broccolli aswell.. still learning what they like, but they go crazy and I mean crazy for sweetcorn!

just edited to add that this is the first buk bukking we've heard since getting them on saturday.. :D:D

Don't judge me, but my girls love the little red boxes the 'sunmaid' raisins come in, they peck at them until they get all the raisins out. So I buy those rather than cheapo value  Oh is appalled!!

Hi Chickaboo. Try this (I do it for my son rather than keep forking out for the Sunmaid raisins): refill the boxes with cheapo value raisins! No more guilt at spending too much money  That's if your girls leave the boxes intact I guess.

Having said that, my husband keeps bringing home organic dried fruit, so my son is actually getting better raisins than those originally in the box.

Could be the Asda raisins - are house are raisin fanatics and I bought some from Asda rather than Waitrose to cut costs. Never again - taste just wasn't there  Sure chooks aren't as picky though

LJ - find someone with chinchillas, they will do anything for a raisin! I haven't tried my chooks with raisins 'cos my chins would go mad at me for giving them away ! i tried the hens with marmite on a muffin, but they 'don't'. They can't get enough grapes though. I tried sweetcorn once, they weren't sure, but I had only just got them so I will try again. They do like Kale, greens and carrot tops. Also pear and apple.

dOn't give up with the raisins.

My three all turned up their beaks at grapes the first time I offered them some. And cabbage.

Now they go bananas for grapes, they can't get enough cbbage...and in fact it's been a similar story with most new foods I've introduced. They still don't like broccoli though.
