Teenagers - are grrrrreat !!!

Recommended Posts

Been reading this with interest as the future parent of a teenager. Read a sad article about computer games in the Guardian yesterday (with a potentially happy ending) and it scared me a bit. I already let Layla play on games where she becomes a character (in her case a Toon - she has grown out of Club Penguin already  ) and it set me thinking about whether I should let her carry on.

I came to the conclusion that all the reasons I let her play on these games are still valid - it helps her keyboard and pc skills as well as (at 7, as a fairly new reader) developing her literacy skills, vocabulary etc. There is also stuff like teamwork, communication, strategy involved.

Her time on the PC is limited and she does not get grumpy when she can't play on it. She has also used the game as a springboard for creative activities - stories and 'shows' based on the game, creating scenes from the game with the aid of a cardboard box and characters and props she has made from paper and card.

So I am glad that parents of teenagers - and teenagers - on here, on the whole, are supportive of computer games.

Laura, you may find you change your mind as Seth gets older. I know I did.

Not looking forward to the canal barges floating in the hall though.

Is it me, or are lots of teenagers getting really tall, really young? :? My son is 6'2" at 15, one of his rowing crew is 6'5" (he's a bit younger  ) and the other 2 are over 6' too. And they're not the only ones, when you see school come out loads of the boys seem enormous  . I can tell if they're 4th year or less by their ties so I know if they're 15 or under.

I know we're all generally getting taller but even so ....

I used to call it 'the McDonalds effect' (meat and growth hormones?)

I am fairly tall but I feel small sometimes when I am among them walking home from school.

Definitely due to better nutrition. (Although some get rather too much nutrition - many more overweight kids around than there were when I was young - which makes me fear for their health)

Its when I look at sports people that I really notice the difference in physique, compared to 30 years ago.

I only grew my last inch after age 13. They must be taller these days because at that point i was 5ft 10 and taller than nearly everyone my age. It was nice when the boys strarted to grow past me but it was definitely later than 13.

By the way, some of you might be interested in this - I've installed a programme which gives you the power to limit the time your kids spend on the PC. Unfortunately there are some teething problems which means it doesn't always work but when it does it's brilliant. You can set it to an amount of time or to only work from say 7-8pm. You have to set up separate accounts but that's no problem.

It's called Ez-Off and only cost £15 so I'm prepared to persevere and hopefully get it running properly.

.

I wonder if you can get something similar for the Xbox (which I have renamed 'the marriage wrecker') ???? It would be a godsend.

Reading the first couple of pages of this thread was just like reading about my husband .... moaning when it is dinner time, wanting to play as soon as gets up, coming to bed at silly-o'clock etc etc etc

 It's a bit like that here too, my eldest has been over 6 foot since year 9 and now at 15 is nearly 6'3" most of his friends are tall too.

Sometimes when I open the door, it looks like a flotilla of canal barges have sailed into the hall

Karen x

Speed reading I thought Karen said that her eldest has been 6 foot since he was 9 :oops::roll::lol::lol::wink:

I know the feeling - I am 5ft (5' 1" on a good day) and my husband is 6' 3". We tend to forget until I want a kiss and have to stand on the stool in the kitchen or we are stood next to each other looking in a mirror  . He is a very broad lad with it as well. I always feel very safe :D

I'm rather jealous of all you shorter ladies! i'm taller than lots of the men i know (i'm 5'10ish).

i know what you mean about teenage boys leaving their shoes by the door though, my mum used to count the giant shoes in the morning to tell if any of us had friends in! (i have two brothers and all my friends are male)

My daughter is only 5'4'' but that is 1'' taller than me and she already calls me 'mini mum' She has got size 7 feet though.

One of her friends is 6'1'' and has size 9 feet which for a 14 year old girl is a bit of a problem. The funny thing is she and her parents are tall and they live in a really tiny cottage with low doors and ceilings all the doors have foam padding at the top

I aggree with what a lot of other people have said about banning children from doing things.

When I was a child I was only allowed chocolate, sweets, crisps etc on birthdays, Easter and Christmas and even then very little. When I started secondary school I started spending all my dinner money on ice cream from the van that came to school gate every luinchtime and usually by Tuesday i had no money left and went hungry for the rest of the week. I also spent all of my pocket money on sweets and crisps through a good deal of my teenage years.

I have always taken the view with my kids, it is more important to teach them some self control within limits than to ban them from things altogether. My son is a gamer but has no internet access and can only use the main pc in the house for homework. He spends more time than I would like playing Sim City on his pc (which he bought for himself reconditioned with his birthday money) I feel he has actually learnt a fair amount from doing this. i would however like to find a way of limiting his pc time.

My teenage daughter definately falls into the lovely category, we are pretty close but she knows my limits long may it continue. Teenagers get a really bad press but most of them are fine. I find it quite funny watching them flirting with each other, they look no different to the 2 blue tits fluttering their wings in my front garden
