Cooks
I believe I read somewhere that there was an alternative to buying disenfectant, and that it was possible to make your own 'green' product for cleaning the eglu.. can anyone help?
chelsea
I dont know about making your own but we use Ecover washing up liquid for scrubbing the eglu.

Ain't Nobody Here
I use Ecover too (and I also have some pet bird spray cleaner - might be Johnsons - which I sometimes use) .
Cooks
that seems the way to go then, they've only been in it a week so far so I will clean it over the next few days when they are just about to go into the new run area. I have emptied the dropping tray though and freshened up the run shavings. am going to look into Auboise when I visit the horse feed place next, I didn't manage to get it last time, but I am going to see how it differs from this shavings with deodorizer that they recommended. Seeing as you all like it so much, it must be worth a try.
Lesley
When we only had the one Eglu, I used Ecover and a few drops of both Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil diluted in warm water. Now, they all get jet washed
Cooks
thanks Lesley, I was planning on cleaning them all over, (with ecover now) and then jet washing to rinse and get in any nooks and crannys I haven't been able to clean. That should work I think. I will bear the lavendar and tea tree in mind, that must make them smell lovely Does the tea tree have the same effect of mites/lice etc on chickens as it does on humans?? Helly Welly
We jetwash ours then i spray all over with a homemade disinfectant, which usually consists of a spray bottle of water and four drops each of tea tree, rosemary and lemon essential oils. The Dogmother
I either jetwash mine, or fill a tubtrug with warm water, a squirt of Bio-D washing up liquid and a few drops of tea tree oil.
Cooks
thanks, I cleaned it with ecover and then jetwashed to make sure... I have today bought some oils from neph aromatics as someone recommended them, and I will add some tea tree to the ecover next time. I also bought Lavender, Eucalyptus and citronella as I thought the last two would help with putting a few drops around the run to distract the flies and the lavender can go in my bath
