Hi, I have just been outside to put the girls to bed and found an egg on the garden path. It didn't seem to have a shell but had a thick membrane at the side and was complete with unbroken yolk. All three of the girls have laid an egg this morning, can anyone tell us why one of them would have laid this extra strange one?? :?

have they only recently started laying?

It sounds like a soft shelled egg and is quite common in newly laying hens, also there have been quite a few posts on here recently where chooks are laying multiple soft shelled eggs in one day.

Nothing major to worry about, if your girls are young layers it should tail off. Making sure they have access to grit will help. :)

just keep an eye on them, which im sure you will!

Hi, Yes they are only young and two of them have only started to lay this last week or so. Does the layers mash contain enough shell or do they need extra grit or shell?

I would if you could have a seperate container with grit/eggshell in it. I have one in my run and my girls help themselves as and when they want it.

if you are going to let them free range they will also pick up bits of grit naturally from the garden.

As your girls are quite new to laying that would be your answer to the odd eggs. :)
