Has anyone on here been to Ireland on their hols?

Mrcluck fancys a week or two in Ireland this summer going over with the car on a ferry then staying in a holiday cottage or similar.

We have got 3 kids ages 18, 12 and 10 to entertain.

We were thinking southern Ireland, Waterford area.

Has anyone been anywhere good?? Any suggestions gratefully recived.

We've had a couple of fabulous holidays in Ireland, and I'd highly recommend it. Beautiful friendly country well worth visiting. Each time we've rented a cottage and taken a ferry across. First time we went to near Skibbereen, 50 miles or so from Cork, just hubby, 2 children and me, then a couple of years ago we went to the west coast right through Connemara, very dramatic country there, that time staying with my sisters, their partners, children and my Mum and her partner. Great fun.

 

But do be prepared for some changeable weather, Ireland is a beautiful, lush, green country, thanks to it's rainfall........ but there's no shortage of pubs in which you can shelter from the rain and sample the odd pint of Guiness while you wait

Gallways is good, pretty & lively old world cobbled streets but lots of things to do

We just had a FANTASTIC holiday on the Dingle Peninsular - Europes most westerly point. We stayed in a lovely B & B i can PM you the details of if you're interested. the scenery was amazing. Here are some photos... The scenery is a complete mix - mountain ranges on one side and the ocean - with gorgeous sandy beaches (ideal for surfing) on the other side.

There was lots to do and see - my highlight being going in a boat to visit Dingle harbours own dolphin which swam alongside us. Was great seeing dolphins in the wild.

 

I had never been to Ireland before but i thought it was beautiful and i'd love to go again.

We stayed in Wexford this Easter and it was fabulous, beaches similar to the ones Helen took photos of, but a flatter landscape, we travelled to Waterford a few times and into Dublin too. OH is Irish but hasn't stayed around where our cottage was before. We booked with Shamrock Cottages which sound a bit dodgy but were lovely, it was cheaper to do this than to take our caravan across

 

There is another company that has some beautiful looking cottages too but I can't remember the name, but I'll look it up for you.

 

I'd like to go again and perhaps go further west, but decided that for a week we'd try where we were.

Haha Emma. I wish but

 

a. we went by plane

 

and

 

b. He has a bad habit of barking nonstop in the car wherever we are going so even if we had gone by ferry he would not have been a welcome passenger - bless him!

 

He'd have loved the walks round there though. I really can't praise it enough - it was beautiful!

I don't know the Waterford area I'm afraid but I'd defintiely recommend the west. As previously mentioned Galway has great nightlife - your 18yr old would enjoy it and it's normal to take kids out to the bar/restaurants so the other 2 will be fine as well.

 

A bit further south is a sweet little seaside town called LaHinch, you should sign all 3 up with John McCarthy's surf school. I gather it is buzzing at night but I've never managed a night out there. The beach is good. The weather can be dodgy, when my kids were doing the surfing it hailed ! and the only day I decided not to squeeze myself into my wet suit every stitch of clothing got soaked through just watching them.

 

Between LaHinch and Galway is the Burren, amazing limestone landscape. Then up from Galway is Conemarra (also mentioned previously). Very different scenery and very wild in places, definitely worth a visit.

 

Although Galway is an easy drive from LaHinch it's a bit far to go for a night out so I'd recommend basing yourselves in LaHinch and head up to Galway for acouple of days. Now also within easy reach are the Arran Islands but to my shame despite my parents living close to LaHinch I've never managed to get over to them.

 

The main downside is the drive I'm usually shattered by the time we get there.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. Stunning pictures gooner girl.

We still havent booked it yet, lots of ideas to go on now though. Think we will be just going for a week as the prices for 2 weeks are a bit scary.

Karen, I have been looking at Shamrock cottages via stenna line. They do sound funny, like they are run by Leprechauns

We've used Shamrock Cottages too - it was a lovely cottage in County Wicklow (although it stank of smoke and wasn't particularly well equipped). Didn't stop us enjoying the holiday though .

 

We've also had holidays in Counties Mayo, Donegal and Antrim - loved them all .

We stayed here http://www.birrcastle.com/accomodationDetailPage.asp?ItemID=2 many years ago. My boys loved it because you get to drive in the huge castle gates and get an appropritely sized key. Birr is literally the middle of Ireland so you're in a great position whatever you want to do.
