Just heard on the news that the first thing Boris is going to do is ban

alcohol on public transport. Personally I think there are far too many

'thou shalt nots' in this country, but I do applaud this ban as I feel

very uncomfortable on public transport if people are drunk or drinking.

Sounds sensible, but then it would never occur to a sensible person like me to drink on pulic transport.

In Singapore, where they are far more draconian, eating and drinking of any sort is banned in the street and on public transport. The best knock on effect is that it's far cleaner on their streets than it is here.

 

My Italian grandma always used to say that it was 'common' to walk along the street while eating or drinking.

It doesn't occur to me to brink at all.. I get hyper on a coke let alone alcohol.

I might have a glass of wine very very occasinally to be sociable, but thats it.

I hate to see people drinking out in the street or on the bus etc.. it's quite off putting.

Good idea, But.. who is going to enforce it? Don't forget the poor guy who remonstrated with the loony (oops sorry how unPC of me) throwing chips at his girlfriend and was stabbed to death!!!

Good point. Somehow people have been persuaded not to smoke on

public transport, so maybe it will work with alcohol too. Although asking

someone who is smoking to stop is a whole different scenario to asking

a drunk to stop. We will have to see.

Was the smoking ban helped out by the Kings Cross Underground Station fire though? I still get shudders down my back going through there.

 

I for one am extremely pleased with the ban. I hate going on the tube with drunk people.

I was brought up with exactly this precept - the only thing we were ever allowed to eat in public was an ice-cream! I have to say that, having got old enough to overthrow the rules, I don't do it anyway - I get indigestion!

 

I think it's a good idea, although unfortunately it won't stop the problem of people who drink BEFORE getting on the Tube and then make a nuisance of themselves.
