divinggatita
Our poor Buttercup seems to also be suffering from Sour Crop with a large squishy crop. I have looked at other posts on the subject and followed advise. I took her to the vets last night as from research it seems to be caused by candida (thrush) and needs anti-fungal treatment. My vet hadn't treated a chicken before and I had to tell him what was wrong and he went and looked on the internet. He didn't know what Nystatin was which is what I asked for but gave her an anti-biotic injection in the crop and another to make her gut contract. He then told me if she survives we can never eat her eggs again! Going back tonight to see a different vet as he's off and I'll check what he gave her that has stopped us from eating her eggs. I'm going armed with prints from internet on the subject to try to get some anti-fungal treatment for her. Anyone know what dose and duration the treatment should be given for. We have no avian vet around Shrewsbury that I can find. Can we use a human thrush treatment in tiny amounts if all else fails at the vets? I'm doing the yoghurt but no longer able to flush her out. Also can we use baby re-hydration sashets to get some electrolytes back into her as sour crop dyhydrates all the tissues.
Egluntyne
Oh heck. What a shame. I can't believe that a vet didn't know what Nystatin is. Maybe his colleague will have more gumption. I hope her condition improves.
Lesley-Jean
It's quite safe to use rehydration fluid for your hen. I hope you can get some anti-fungal for her. What a hopless vet, hope you get better luck with the next one
