My Maran Cuivre has black feathers that shine green but she also has a lot of chestnut on her head and chest (other MC's might not have as much).

There are photos of her at

Have a look at this post which has some info on where to buy chickens.

I had 2 Miss Pepperpots from Omlet (Bovans Nera). One was almost entirely black and looked like a crow - sadly I lost her. But the other Pepperpot is black with lovely brown bits (she is then hen in my avatar).

The Bovans Nera are hybrids. I'm sure there are also lovely pure breed black hens others might be able to advise you on as well.

You can order a copy of Practical Poultry Magazine online and have it posted for £3.60. In the June 2008 issue which is out now, there are 6 whole pages of contacts in the Breeders Directory. And if you find one near you I'm sure someone on this forum may know of them and give further advice.

I think most healthy black chickens have the green sheen to their feathers, I know both my pepperpot and maran cuivre have. I tried googling the sumatra as well though and it seems it does have a particularly nice green sheen to it. Originally bred as fighters I think, here is a bit of info: http://www.pekinbantam.co.uk/id21.html

I think they are quite rare in this country. There seems to be far more american sites on them. :D

I got my beautiful black rock from Glencroft poultry in North Yorkshire. A bit of a hike for you but if you know what you want . . . . . what's an extra few miles . . . . . . . .

They have a web site and he has a barn full of glossy black feathers with a green sheen!
