Hen Huggers R Us
Hi can anyone help, we are in Lancashire and want to aquire a new member to our family, we are looking for a black hen the jet black type with the the emerald green silky sheen, don't mind a bit of a journey 100 miles or so would go to great lengths to find on,could anyone confirm the breed we are looking for think it's a Black Sumatra or Bovan Nera(Nero)?? HELP!!!
Christian
A Bovans Nera is a Pepperpot I think. Aka Black rock and many other names. Try emailing Barbara@omlet.co.uk She might have a list of breeders near you? Or the back of Practical poultry magazine? Good luck edit - will move this to chickens as you might get more replies
jomaxsmith
My Maran Cuivre has black feathers that shine green but she also has a lot of chestnut on her head and chest (other MC's might not have as much). There are photos of her at http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=518006&l=c74f0&id=663092293 http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=518007&l=307e4&id=663092293 but neither show the green sheen very well Jo
Hen Watch
Have a look at this post which has some info on where to buy chickens. http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4658 I had 2 Miss Pepperpots from Omlet (Bovans Nera). One was almost entirely black and looked like a crow - sadly I lost her. But the other Pepperpot is black with lovely brown bits (she is then hen in my avatar). The Bovans Nera are hybrids. I'm sure there are also lovely pure breed black hens others might be able to advise you on as well. You can order a copy of Practical Poultry Magazine online and have it posted for £3.60. In the June 2008 issue which is out now, there are 6 whole pages of contacts in the Breeders Directory. And if you find one near you I'm sure someone on this forum may know of them and give further advice. http://www.practicalpoultry.co.uk/
Chickvic
My Pepperpot has fantastic black feathers with the green sheen. She was from Omlet.
Snowy
I think most healthy black chickens have the green sheen to their feathers, I know both my pepperpot and maran cuivre have. I tried googling the sumatra as well though and it seems it does have a particularly nice green sheen to it. Originally bred as fighters I think, here is a bit of info: http://www.pekinbantam.co.uk/id21.html I think they are quite rare in this country. There seems to be far more american sites on them. Abbey Road Girl
I love the green sheen on my Pepperpots' black feathers. Two of the four however have more of the black feathering than the others. As it's an individual thing, you will want to see before buying. Have fun looking and choosing!
