Valkyrie
How about Sweetie Pie (Sweetie for you and Pie to keep OH happy - and it's better than Drumstick!)?
Egg Lou
great idea but don't think he will buy it! Its not for this hen btw, he is choosing a "normal brown chicken" in his own words!! I will be offering this suggestion though
Cooks
oh I missed this, she's beautifull!, very very pretty girl indeed.

superjules
Amber stars are great. Ours is our boldest, greediest chook who jumps up at people like an excited puppy when they go in the run holding anything that looks like it might be food! She perches on shoulders too, although she's getting a bit big for that now! Hybrids can give the purebreeds a run for their money in the looks department! I think my hybrid Magpie (pied suffolk) is my most beautiful chook, even prettier than my Silver-Laced Wyandotte, and my skyline Yaddle is rather lovely looking too, although obviously I love all my chooks equally! Egg Lou
Ahh she sounds lovely! do you have a photo?? going chook mad at the moment! Rhapsody I can see your goat visit may end up with a few chooks in tow??
Rhapsody
Rhapsody I can see your goat visit may end up with a few chooks in tow?? It will if the BHWT dont get me some chooks soon!
superjules
She's only got a few amber speckles on her because my daughter said she wanted the whitest one in the pen when we went to buy her. This was her on my shoulder at about 17 weeks old: She's a big girl now though!
BarbaraJ
Aww i have an Amber star too and mine is a piggy and jumps lol
Egg Lou
Ahh they are both gorgeous! thank you so much for posting pic's! Would love a cook on my shoulder! and Barbara yours looks very similar.. Getting so impatient!!
superjules
BarbaraJ and I have fantastic taste in chooks - we have virtually identical pied suffolks too! What else are you going to get Egg lou?
Egg Lou
Not exactly sure Obviously getting all from same place so only about 4 to choose from.. I'm not exactly sure of the breeds as hard to remember..( was over excited at the time!) There were pied something.. poss suffolks? DD poss choosing this one Ranger/ISA types Cooper Noir (Maran based hybrid looks like PepperPot) Black Tailed Suffolk/ or Sussex?? these were so soft and friendly! OH likes this "normal" looking hen Amber Stars- may have another one of these in pure white? He is also hoping for bluebelles by time I go back.. I have pics so may post at later to see if I have remembered right!!
superjules
Oooh, get a pied suffolk - mine's lovely. She's beautiful and my best layer, only having taken one day off since she started around easter. She's very quiet too, she only speaks after she's laid. She lays slightly pink-tinted eggs. Here she is:
Egg Lou
Ahh shes lovely !!! not sure the ones I saw are the same as don't seem as striking or as much silver/grey.. guess it could be due to being younger I am such a novice!!
superjules
Egg lou, you are less of a novice than you think. You are right - Magpie's colours have gone wrong - she should have a much darker body with just a silver collar. I chose her (out of about 50 pied suffolks) because she looked different and caught my eye. She's a total darling.
Snowy
Jules she is gorgeous! You are right, she does have a lot more silver on her. My new baby, Spice, is a pied and she has just the lovely silver collar. Some in the pen were nearly all black! They do seem to be lovely birds - mine is very friendly already and loves a cuddle! Nice to know she is likely to be a good layer as well - I didn't know much about them, just fell in love with the colour
Egg Lou
Oh ta.. had another look at pic ..(system won't let me post it while at work) and with that knowledge I'm fairly sure they are Pied Suffolks.. Interesting you said they are quiet and friendly as these ones seemed to hold back more than the others while there and DD wanted one to cuddle.. being "quiet" sounds like a good idea too! Snowy
Don't forget they are still young and do react differently when you see them at the farms (apart from the odd exception like your amberstar - I had one that chose me and she has a superb temperament! ) The pieds are likely to grow into large, fluffy cuddly hens so a good choice for children! Mine has had a few days to settle in and is showing signs of being friendly already, should be even better when she comes into lay
surferdog
She looks very like Sylvie who we bought as a Silver Nova but might be the different breeders names? She's a real sweetie but an absolute ditz! Very clumsy and VERY vocal. She is absolutely beautiful though (will post a pic of her all growed up once I find the connector cable) but not blessed in the brains department. She's currently in the nesting box trying to hatch out an ice block.... Lou, if you're over this way you're welcome to come and have a look at her. Egg Lou
Thanks you both thats reassuring for DD.. except perhaps the vocal element! Oh yes coming to see would be lovely! I think you have a bluebell too. is that right? Might be worth me collecting the feed we discussed then and just bringing over?
Ain't Nobody Here
Here's Molly, my Pied Suffolk. She's a bit of a scaredy-cat and won't come out of the run if I'm standing there (well, I might grab her and do unspeakable things ), but she's lovely and lays pale pinky eggs too! (For any new chicken owners, my grass looked like that before the girls arrived )
Egg Lou
Thank you.. I didn't realise quite how varied the colouring would be! I'll show these to DD later to see if she wants to change her mind back to having one
