MaxBaz
Yesterday was the 3rd anniversary of us losing a much loved dog - so to cheer ourselves up booked to see new Indiana Jones movie and go out for a curry. Spent the morning giving the cube a good spring clean. About 10 minutes into the movie - suddenly thought - "OMG did I close the Egg Hatch?" Was absolutely convinced I hadn't and spent the next 3 hours thinking: a) A fox had go in and eaten my girls or b) They had got out through the egg port into next doors garden and a fox had eaten them or c) They had escaped into the garden and eaten all the growing potatoes and got poisoned..... When we EVENTUALLY got home - what did I find? All sound asleep snuggled together on the perch....and everything where it should be. What those little ones put us through!!!!!! PS The movie was actually very good - but was so distracted will probably have to see it again...
Gallina
I suspect that if you left the Cube eggport door in place but not locked, you would be likely to get away with it even if a fox did visit, because it is so high up. Don't tell me if this isn't true, because this is how I reassure myself when I worry I haven't locked mine. (I haven't tried shaking the run with my teeth to see if it falls out.) I used to worry that I hadn't put the run-door pin in properly too, but I now always do it slowly and carefully. On one of my runs I had to make an adjustment with pliers as it was too easy to miss one of the catches. There is something about hens that makes you want to stay at home all the time, but you have to fight it.

Olly
When you get chickens, it just adds to the list of things to worry about ... as well as 'did I lock the back door' and 'did I turn the gas off', we can now add 'did I close the Eggport'. That's why I no longer close the door to the Cube. I don't want to spend the day thinking 'did I leave the hens locked in'.

lisaroo2
I get hubbie-to-be to check to the eglu door, gas, etc as I just would never relax when we leave home or go anywhere! Oh yes, chook caring brings with it a whole lot of things to worry about, but also a heck of a lot of pleasure and I reckon that out weighs the worry factor!
