Hi all! I'm new!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum, but have had my eglu for almost 3 years now. I just wanted to share my week with you.

On the 12th May we lost Buttercup, our Miss P, to egg peritonitis - big shock and left us with 1 lonely Gingernut Ranger, Rosie.

Knowing that 1 hen is a bad thing I arranged to go and get 3 more on the following Tuesday afternoon - stay with me, it livens up in a moment... :D

I work in a school, on Tuesday morning a group of our about-to-leave 6th formers thought it would be fun to release 6 chickens into the school. Chaos ensued as they were rounded up (the hens, not the 6th formers). I ended up with 4 and another colleague could house 2! :D

I have chickens of fate!!! :D:D:D

Anyway, Rosie has been busy establishing herself as top bird, but all in all they have settled in very well. They are all laying and DH has rigged up a chiken cam so that my colleagues and I can watch them from work!

Jobs for half term? Creat fab new run - of course! :D

Poor Dh, keep swandering round saying "OMG, we have 5 chickens...", but he's quite pleased really!

Anyway, that's enough for now! Nice to meet you all!

Hi! I'll get pics up as soon as I can. It's pouring with rain at the moment so the girls aren't looking their best.

As for the kids, well, we've had words with some but no one has 'fessed up yet...

But we did hear from someone not directly involved that for what they paid for 6 birds, they could have had 100. Now that would have been a sight!

On the CCTV footage all you can see is a group all wearing hoodies, shades and curley clown wigs :D

Sorry *ahem* I'm meant to be very dissaproving of course, but it was very funny!

Love the bit about them paying over a small fortune for 6 girls :lol: Great about the curley clown wigs - must have been a great day at work, 4 great gilrs and huge laugh

Welcome to the forum, Ebaygirl :D . Glad to hear you were on hand to rescue those unfortunate girlies :) . (It does sound funny, what with the wigs 'n all, but what did they expect would happen to the chickens after they'd had their fun :? . Were they just planning to let them get run over or go wild?) Kids  . What happened to just signing everyone else's school shirt :lol: .

Anyway, it's had a happy ending and it sounds like they've ended up in a lovely home :D . (Love the image of your OH ... "OMG we have 5 chickens  " )

Love the story Ebaygirl. Welcome to the forum :D Make sure DH builds a run big enough to house more chickens then you can expand :lol:

We have loads of rain here today too - poor girls are back in their run again after taking advantage of a gap in the weather this morning

Welcome to the forum, fantastic that you and a colleague could home the chickens, it was definitely fate that your chickens found you :D but a tad worrying as that's the second lot of chickens being set loose in a school that I've heard of this week :(

My son came home from school on Friday and said that some sixth formers had released chickens in his school reception

Is this just a coincidence or is there something on facebook or the like encouraging them to do this and where are they getting the chickens from? Your story has a happy ending, but some poor chooks may not be so lucky

Hadn't considered the facebook etc theory. I also heard about the same thing happening at a school in Cheltenham, so perhaps it is this year's in thing.

I know that the consequences could have been awful, but tbh, I know of so many chicken keepers amongst my colleagues and at other schools that it is probably one of the better animals to release.

Piglets, anyone...

I'm just very happy that we found each other when we did. I'll get some pictures together, probably towards the end of the week when, hopefully, we'll have stopped arguing - er... discussing - about the final design of their fabulous new home!

They're not too hard-done-by now btw, but there is room for improvement!

I completely agree with you. Hopefully my two boys will have more respect for animals by that age as they will have been around them for so long. (They're 8 & 5 now).

Mind you, with what the leavers write and draw on the shirts these days, I think I'd rather have the chickens to look after. I must be getting old!
