Troy
Introduced the girls to you all a few days ago and I am so happy that they have all settled in beautifully with no problems or squabbles. Infact they all just hang like they have known each other for years! But this morning things are not so good Our Phyllis is quite poorly and I am not sure at this point if my most favorite of them all is going to make it. Funnily enough it was Maude who had the sniffles a few days ago and yet she is right as rain now obviously gotten over a cold. However, Phyllis this morning was taken out of the cube (Shes always the third out and down one rung at a time like a little lady and is the first to greet you.) and she was all hunched up and making the most god awful croupy sound. Her nose was all clogged up and her mouth wide open. (this was at 6.30 this morning) Anyway off I packed her to our vets first thing today and Phyllis was given Baytril and a poor prognosis as she had'nt touched a bit of food or water. Her legs and tiny little comb are pale and she is a little cold too I've perservered though (as you do) as in the short time we've had Phyllis we've known her to be quite a plucky little thing. Oh poo I have to say it but shes really grown on me! As soon as I came back from the vets I filled a small syringe with honey and a few drops of water and popped Phyllis on my lap. She finally, after a few cuddles, took some honey!!!! so I've since brought a small pot of growers mash up and made a proper mash with boiled water. cooled down of course) and to my delight she has eaten a comfortable amount and taken some water down with it!! I also had the sense to get the old eucalyptus oil out (the kids love it when they have blocked noses)and held it to her nose and beak for about 15 mins. I actually think it helped 'cos all this mucus cleared out of her nose!! AND she didnt seem to mind it at all! I've now popped her back into the box with her pot of mash and another pot of water and have dropped some oil onto the Aubiose. Ooo I've just checked on her and although she sounds 'chesty' she is standing up and eating her mash!!!! So what have I been doing today? I've just seen the time!! Pls keep fingers crossed as I know this could still go either way but I've only had chickens for 6 days now and I feel like its been forever! Cyber Chook
It's amazing to me how attached you can become to these funny, fluffy, daft creatures. I really hope Phyllis carries on improving so well in your chicken hospital with all your TLC. Not wanting to add to the anxiety, but I hope also that the others stay bright and healthy too, as I imagine these respiratory things are probably highly contagious. Troy
Thank you all so very much for your positive thoughts and good messages. After what seemed like a very, very long afternoon with our Phyllis hunched up in her box of Aubiose in the kitchen and my regular Florence Nightingale glucose syringes and Eucalyptus oil infusions the little sprog with her awful laboured breathing decided to announce to the whole village that... she was back !!!! Once she started eating I thought she might be in with a good chance so I soaked dried mealworms in water yuk they swelled up horribly and made her a little more warm growers mash with a tiny bit of honey in it. Once she perked up I think she actually enjoyed anticipating the whats next for me time on my lap! Talk about bonding. By 3pm she was anxious to get out of her little box and she wanted out!. Her breathing seemed quiet and normal, so rather than stressing her out even further I popped her back into the run with the girls. Maude was sooo happy to see her! and I really believe that there is no place like home when you're not 100% She has been sunbathing all afternoon with her mates and is eating and drinking like her usual self now and her nose seems to have dried up too. PHEW is all I can say. What a bloomin learning curve eh? Cyber Chook thanks for your concern re the others. I am watching them very closely and at moment appear well and bright. And just to add, hubby came home from a meeting in London this afternoon all anxious about 'his Phyllis' Got the pressure hose out took the cube out of the run stripped it bare and Stalosand it senseless. There ain't no bugs in there thats for sure! Troy

Troy
Its gonna be a good day! Girls ejected from their 'plane' at 0645am. Squadron leader Matilda then Maude and - yes Caroline - my lovely new friend Phyllis who launched herself onto my arm for a hello and a cuddle! (and 2nd day of Baytril) All look well therefore all is well!! Troy
