JM Posted June 10, 2008 Share Posted June 10, 2008 I've just discovered that mine go mad for goose grass (or cleavers - you know the weed that sticks to you and has little bobbles on it). They hadn't liked anything else I'd given them so far (since Thursday) - but I tried them on a bit and they wolfed it down - I wonder if they have developed a taste for it as they've been out and about? (I hope it is OK for them - I know humans and dogs can eat it...) (We've got lots in the garden, so maybe they can help keep it under control!) He needs some serious chook education. Pretty much everything (other than foxglove, raw potato and avocado) is ok in moderation, I think. I wouldn't eat raw potatoes either Mine go wild for the green tops off spring onions . and carrott peelings, sweetcorn obviously, and strawberries, slugs, tomatoes, brocoli, lettuce... big fans of lettuce spinach. chickencam Posted June 11, 2008 Share Posted June 11, 2008 Mine love cabbage, cauliflower leaves, really love lettuce especially nice crisp stuff and radish tops, I tend to avoid the long roots because I worry that they might get tangled in their crops like long grass does. They have eaten over the last few days all of my bolted spinach plants and have loved them stalks and all. Mine aren't fussed on fruit. They also love the weed called Fat hen, as you might guess. As humans can eat beetroot tops, I reckon they are safe for hens. I wouldn't give too much lettuce. I wondered about that - as the old country names tend to describe the plant use or characteristics don't they! (I read on t'internet this morning that goose grass is from the same family as coffee - you can roast the seeds and make coffee from it - apparently it tastes similar but with no caffeine). stoice Posted June 11, 2008 Share Posted June 11, 2008 Extra treat yesterday was a swarm of cabbage white catapillars served on a bed of bolted cauliflower leaves! Yum They also LOVE grapes (The best) then, sweetcorn, dandilions and cabbage (a whole savoy cabbage on string is reduced to it's core in under 24 hours by my 4 girls).
