jackiepoppies
I know greens are good but are there any you should NOT give? For instance, radish, carrot and beetroot tops. Any advice gratefully received as chooks arrive tomorrow and I've got all three! Thanks, Jackiex
Tiggy
mine absolutely love broccoli leaves, dandelions, stale bread soaked in water with a little milkyogurt with bokash bran, they are all different so you will soon learn what your girls like, dont feed avacados or spud because its poisonous, think there is a sticky somewhere about treats
Phosphorus
dont feed avacados or spud because its poisonous, think there is a sticky somewhere about treats Spuds are okay but they must be cooked first. Avocado is a definate no no along with anything salty. Dairy other than yogurt is also not good for them.

JM
I've just discovered that mine go mad for goose grass (or cleavers - you know the weed that sticks to you and has little bobbles on it). They hadn't liked anything else I'd given them so far (since Thursday) - but I tried them on a bit and they wolfed it down - I wonder if they have developed a taste for it as they've been out and about? (I hope it is OK for them - I know humans and dogs can eat it...) (We've got lots in the garden, so maybe they can help keep it under control!) Snowy
Jackie I've found radish, carrot and beetroot tops are considered a special chook delicacy - especially radishes!
superjules
Mine will eat anything - OH chucked an unearthed spud plant in the run last night which I had to rescue this morning. He needs some serious chook education. Pretty much everything (other than foxglove, raw potato and avocado) is ok in moderation, I think. Mrs Slats
Yes, cooked potatoes are fine. If they are cooked enough for human consumption, then they will be fine for your girls. I wouldn't eat raw potatoes either Mine go wild for the green tops off spring onions . and carrott peelings, sweetcorn obviously, and strawberries, slugs, tomatoes, brocoli, lettuce... big fans of lettuce spinach. chickencam
Mine love cabbage, cauliflower leaves, really love lettuce especially nice crisp stuff and radish tops, I tend to avoid the long roots because I worry that they might get tangled in their crops like long grass does. They have eaten over the last few days all of my bolted spinach plants and have loved them stalks and all. Mine aren't fussed on fruit. Gallina
It's not surprising that they like goose grass, as it used to be grown as food for geese -- hence its name. They also love the weed called Fat hen, as you might guess. As humans can eat beetroot tops, I reckon they are safe for hens. I wouldn't give too much lettuce. JM
It's not surprising that they like goose grass, as it used to be grown as food for geese -- hence its name. I wondered about that - as the old country names tend to describe the plant use or characteristics don't they! (I read on t'internet this morning that goose grass is from the same family as coffee - you can roast the seeds and make coffee from it - apparently it tastes similar but with no caffeine). stoice
Extra treat yesterday was a swarm of cabbage white catapillars served on a bed of bolted cauliflower leaves! Yum They also LOVE grapes (The best) then, sweetcorn, dandilions and cabbage (a whole savoy cabbage on string is reduced to it's core in under 24 hours by my 4 girls). Galia melon occasionally is welcome but they could take or leave carrot peelings though. Fuss pots

Seagazer
The only thing mine don't seem to like at the moment is carrot peelings but never mind the rabbit eats them. They love anything green that I hang up for them, cooked rice, cherry tomatoes etc. They don't seem very interested in my slugs and snails though
chickencam
They love slugs but I find will only eat snails if they are lightly crushed first
