Dimensions of the cube run

Recommended Posts

I've been studying the size of the cube run, & think that the length of it is not as long as Omlet claim.

Certainly it is 3m long in total if you have the 1m extension & you include the fox proof skirt, which is 20cm each end, giving a total of 40cm skirt-wise.

The actual area that the chickens have is only 260cm- or am I reading things wrong?

Edited for terrible spelling.

Hi Jules,

Glad you have posted this as I have a cube on order with just the standard run and have been wondering if this will be enough room for the four girls, or if I need to order the additional 1 metre run.

Assuming the measurements in the brochure for the standard run are the same, than can I assume that 200cm is the total length and that minus the 40cm for the fox proof skirt, that the run inside is 160cm?

If so will 160cm be enough room for 4 hens?

They will only be in the run in the morning and then free range for the rest of the day.

I originally ordered the standard run but changed at last minute and added extension.. I have 4 hens and after having them in the 3 metre for the last week personally feel I wouldn't have been happy with the standard run for 4 now at all.

Although there are plenty of others who manage quite well so think its a personal decision.

Thanks Egg Lou,

To be honest I was already about 60/40 in favour of adding the extension to my order and this has probably tipped me another 10% in favour.

Only problem is I had already decided to add the 25 metre netting to my order too - gosh when you add up cube, extension, netting, hens and feed I am looking at £850 ish

Better hide the invoice from my hubby

That alters my calulations from a few weeks ago - with the Eglu run length you only have to take away the skirt dimension at one end, on the cube what is referred to as the '2m run' is indeed external dimensions.

At 1.6 * 1.2m Cube standard run = 1.92m chciken floor space in the standard run.

The Eglu standard run (assuming average width) = 1.95m chciken floor space - the same as a cube with a standard run!!

When you start adding extra extensions both the Cube & Eglu are 1m long and Eglu only 5cm narrower.

So adding run space is comparable between the two products - the BIG difference is in the size of the sleeping quarters and nest box space.

I must say mine just go at in the Omlet netting 4+ whole days a week, plus evenings on the other days so I do not get too hung up on the run space - its fine for the time they are actually in there.

don't know about the actual dimensions, but I've got 4 chooks in a Cube with an extension, and I wouldn't want them to have any less space. However mine don't free-range much - if they were out more, then I might feel it was enough.

As Claret says, it looks more 'balanced' with the extension.

I reckon four in a Cube with the run plus one extension is perfect as well. I have two Cubes with extensions and eight hens, and they don't get in each other's way at all.

The extension measures a full metre. Omlet measures its cubes and eglus including the skirt, but the extensions don't have a front skirt of their own: it comes from the front of the original run.

Yes we have remembered the bit under the Cube - if you look at the dimensions from Omlet when they quote 2m run that is the external dimensions - including the 20cm skirt front & back, so end-to-end without the skirt is 1.6 metres - obviously everytime you add an extension you get a full 1m extra as no additional skirt to take off.
