Spiral egg rack?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I saw a spiral egg rack on here once and can't find it again. Not the stainless steel one which is like a stand with rings coming off it, but it's sort of like a helter skelter, so the eggs move down as you take the bottom one out. It might have been made in cast iron, possibly.

Hope this rings a bell with someone.

Thanks!

As long as your eggs are bigger than about 50g they're fine on the standard skelter, although Daffodil's 80g efforts look a bit precarious sometimes! Our bantam eggs are more like 32-38g so too small for a standard size skelter.

If you're going to get one, lalefm, based on the chooks you have in your sig, get a standard size definitely. Even if your girls start off laying 45g they'll soon be laying bigger ones which will fit nicely on the standard skelter.

I'm feeling creative and I've been eyeing up those Pringles tubes, wondering if I can make my own egg thingy.... then I think "life's too short to make your own egg skelter, Caroline", but I might give it a go... the Pisces in me (fish going in opposite directions) makes most decisions a nightmare

this was one of my problems my hens lay smallish eggs at the moment, which is no problem but I wanted an egg skelter really (hubby prefers the ceramic hen) but there's no point getting one yet until their eggs get a little bigger, we are just hitting the 50'gs with Sugar and no hitting them often with Cocoa (although she has laid two bigguns) then she goes back to the normal size for her.

The ceramic hen is lovely though (even with it's cracked neck)

Ooooh, I replied to a similar thread just yesterday...can't find it now though!

Anyway, the people who make the egg skelter say eggs should not be kept in the fridge as it interferes with the antibacterial coating or something and that is why eggs in the supermarket are never in the chiller and they also say that eggs stored out of the fridge will keep for weeks. The hen gives a special antibacterial coating to the egg when she lays it...so clever! That's why you should never wash eggs, just brush off any dirt. Washing can force bacteria into the egg so contaminating it.

Also, according to Delia, for most baking/cooking jobs, eggs at room temp give better results.

I also checked on the Brit Eggs website (the official website for british eggs) and they say that a steady temp under 20degrees C is best. The fridge temp can vary quite a bit with the opening and closing of the door so eggs are best in a coolish place out of the fridge. They also say that lion stamped eggs have a use by date 27 days from being laid.

I must say mine never have a chance of being kept as long as 27 days! Three days is good going round here!
