Freecycled chicken - UPDATED WITH PICTURES - P3

Recommended Posts

Anyone seen the post offering a chicken on Chelmsford Freecycle???

I've put myself forward to take her because I want to see her go to a good home. The woman says she is too big for her run and wants bantams. I have to say I was a bit upset to see her being offered there.

I haven't seen her, I am in a different area, but I have seen dogs, hamsters, snails... I hate seeing animals advertised on a 'free' website. I would prefer the new owner pay for the pet (even if the current owner donates that money to an animal charity) as I feel it encourages responsible pet owners.

on my freecycle theres no restriction on pets.. I am sure of it, I have read it at some point.

edited to add.. mine says in the instruction bit....

9) Can we use Freecycle to find homes for pets?

Yes but keep it legal and be "lovingly careful".

I dont agree that thats a place for pets though...

My local groups all say 'no pets'. I do tend to agree ... on here you're likely to get someone whom you already know about (yes, I DO know that people posting on internent forums don't always tell the truth, but I think you could form a view on the number of chickeny posts they have made!)

Given the unreliability of a lot of the people I've encountered on Freecycle, I'd be worried about putting a chicken on there.

Thats what worried me too. I don't really want another SINGLE chicken at he moment, makes intros harder, not supposed to get any till after our summer hols either. BUT I felt that as a responsible chicken owner I had a duty to respond.

I also thought that freecycle doesn't allow pets... Ours certainly doesn't!

However I don't have a problem with people posting their animals on a "free to a good home" website.

I would much rather people was able to pass their animals responsibly, rather than keep them begrudgingly and neglect them.

Paying for an animal, or conducting a home inspection, does not make the potential owner(s) any more responsible, in my opinion.

no it doesn't guarantee to make them any more responsible, however I always feel if you cant pay for the animal how can you pay for it's upkeep?

I would happily pay a donation to an animal charity if the owner didn't want anything themselve and feel thats only right. Too many people are looking for free animals on the internet and free papers and I dont believe it's right. That's my opinion.

I didn't mention the welfare issue for homing her with someone who doesn't have chickens - I didn't want it to sound like I was dictating to her in any way. I just explained my set up and how I have the facilities to introduce her to an established flock in a seperate "luxury" accomodation to minimise pecking order problems.

The original email said she was going to see what people said as she wanted a loving home and decide in a few hours time.

Excellent!

I've got my fingers crossed for you! I really hope you get them, as they will be living in 5 star luxury accomodation, within a small flock of happy hens!

Good luck...
