McChook
Are any of you going to the Motor Cycle Museum in Birmingham on Friday to support Hugh in his Chicken Out campaign against Tesco? According to the Chicken Out website: This Friday, June 27th, the writer and broadcaster Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall will be speaking on behalf of a resolution he has submitted at the Tesco AGM in Birmingham My sister and I received letters from CiWF inviting us to attend, so time off has been duly booked and we're going - will we see any of you there? The Dogmother
My friend is a Te$co shareholder - purely to back Hugh - and is going along.
McChook
UPDATE: Since posting, we have heard that the venue has changed - there will be 'stunts' outside the Tesco express's in New Street (City Centre), Knowle and Castle Bromwich throughout the day, not at the Motor Cycle Museum as originally planned

Lesley
.....but it's failed Only 10% supported it Tesco said it would add £1 to the cost of a chicken.... but all the other supermarkets can do it for only slightly more.

Flo
ooh this makes me so cross! All of the press about it is so short sighted, it is not just about welfare of chickens vs cost of food, but about our whole approach to food. We should be paying what it costs to make food, not what big supermarkets can bully producers into making it for and not compromising standards and welfare to make cheap food. Did anyone see HFW piece on Channel 4 about the nutrious content of intensively farmed chicken?
Lesley
Off to look at the online news.. Laura just posted this link in a separate thread, which I've deleted at her request http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7476829.stm
The Dogmother
Thanks Lesley, saved me scratching around for it.
The Dogmother
From my shareholder friend: Did he need a 75% majority ? And he might have lost the vote, but the amount of publicity it generated, don't forget its been 6 months since Chicken Run was TV. And... if he has changed one persons mind, it has saved one chicken. And we know he has with eggs, you know yourself with the waiting lists for BHWT. All great journeys start with one step, and HFW and all chicken out campaigners have made lots of steps since January. And.... with the credit crunch and world food crisis, people will get used to just having a little good quality meat, rather than stuffing their faces. Like all school bullies, the supermarkets will meet their match, and I bet if truth be told they are shocked so far. Just wait until next years AGM
The Dogmother
Tesco shares have taken a bashing http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/investing-and-markets/article.html?in_article_id=443870&in_page_id=
McChook
Tesco shares have taken a bashing I can't say I'm sorry! They seem to have a lot to answer for today! I was at the demonstration outside Tesco Metro in Knowle today with CiWF where we handed out leaflets and spoke to people about the appalling conditions broiler chickens are forced to spend their (short) lives in. People were generally very supportive of us and our aims and, as someone else mentioned earlier, if we changed one person's mind, that's one person who will buy free range and leave the 'standard' chicken on the shelf. Well done CiWF and well done Hugh!
Valkyrie
My Canadian cousin - second or once removed or so - is a film cameraman. He popped in the other night and told us he was filming the Tesco's AGM. I said he would be seeing HFW, and he replied "who?" We told him and he said that they had been warned about campaign activists might cause problems. Did anyone cause a problem, because I didn't hear of it. AMO
Very few people were there apparently. The rescue co-ordinators from West Mids BHWT went along and spent some time with HFW and he kindly posed for photos with their new leaflets.
MedusA
I was really sorry not to get along to some of the stunts (I had a family emergency), but I did contact Tesco requesting they support the resolution. I have since written to them again, informing them that I am withdrawing my custom as a result of the non-support of the resolution. If we all vote with our feet, they will have to change their minds, surely?
