Valkyrie
Yesterday we felt guilty at not letting them have a bigger run, so we set up the netting and allowed them outside. We have witnessed them "flying", which is more like a mad dash back into the run when the odd drip of rain from the oak tree landed on them! This morning they have ventured onto the dirt patch which will be their winter quarters, and it seems to be the favourite place to be. Slightly blurry because they are mid scratch dancing. Heads together in case someone finds a juicy morsel first, then they all pounce! Sioux (blue) is the weed - always not wanting to be left behind - lift up skirts and ruuuuuun! The last couple of days she is the first out the cube, and last to go to bed. I thought we might have to practice our shepherding skills (as yet undiscovered) because we let them out too soon. But we didn't have to worry, the rain helped and they went back in the run no problem at all. Night time and treats found no worries for us - not one peep. They were back in the run by then anyway, so they enjoyed their grain. Now they are eating from our hands, but still reluctant to be touched. We had the doors open to listen to the squabbling at bedtime. Not one sound - they had taken themselves off to bed before 9.30 and settled down. Probably worn out after all that exercise. DD and I went out an hour later to have a stroke. They were all tucked in one corner (within easy reach for change) and someone purred. So they are out again this morning and have now dispatched 2 slugs and a snail, among other creepy crawlies too slow to escape.

Valkyrie
Coo that was quick, Prettychic! Since we let them out, we don't seem to be getting the feather bed look on the grass now! I was a bit worried by the mustard poo, but I see it is really classified as "curry poo", now I know what it is - eeeeewwwwwww!

Valkyrie
Oh gawd, Egg Lou - that's what we say to my in-laws! We've just had the council round with the strimmers and some sporty car with a loud brmmmm - I was in the greenhouse at the time and no sound from the girls (yep, I am paranoid and I am sure I have added to the grey hair since Saturday). OH keeps saying not to worry - easier said than done. I am certain they are happier now they have the option to roam - although last look they were all lying down under the cube, now they think they are cows chewing the cud! Earlier on I went in the "paddock" when they were wandering around to adjust the shade on the run and they didn't run away at all (actually they totally ignored me - I was quite miffed!) Lapinou
Lovely photos - what gorgeous girls! I'm worrying myself that as soon as I can save enough money, we'll be getting another eglu and being brave and getting some 'different' chooks instead of omlet girls (lovely as they are!) Valkyrie
Thank you one and all. Lapinou - if you can look after Omlet girls, the breeds are not any different - just an assortment of sizes and colours. They are all time wasters, though! I have nearly finished the ironing ready for the next lot. Hoovering - I can just remember what it was like (and even then with my children it was a losing battle). Sioux has a taste for slugs and can smell them a mile away, while the others can't find them at all, and if they do happen across one, Sioux charges in from a few yards away and pinches it! I don't think I have ever spent so long sitting in the garden - and in the rain too.
