wombatally
I'm working from home today and from my upstairs office window I can see into the run where the 6 are forraging around. They stay in the run which has a wall on 2 sides and fence/hedge on the other - about 1m high in all. I have always banked on them not being clever enough to get out but I looked out of the window an hour ago and the two goldlines were on the wall. The goldlines are the naughty twins out of the bunch - where one goes the other follows. When I went out they were being very cocky bokking away at me to tell me how clever they are - so I went inside, got the scissors and gave them a good wing clipping. Now who's clever... In reflection to this post I cannot believe I think I am so good for outwitting a couple of hens
Tilly Bud
Your chickens sound cheeky! I like them already! Mine are so busy pecking and pooing i don't think they'll ever have time to plot an escape!
stoice
You may find they'll still 'jump' quite high even with a wing clipped. Particularly if they're POL or younger. I'm assured when they start laying they can't/don't bother jumping so high. Good thing too, as my youngsters seem rather atheletic at the mo!! Cooks
I haven;t clipped my twos wings, they dont go anywhere other than the garden, they are too worried they are not going to get their nightly treats!. Although Sugar is a tad more flighty than Cocoa (cocoas bottom holds her down)
AJuff
I have a flock of escapees!!! The garden is just not good enough . . . . they have the grass is greener syndrome!!!! Netting is useless, fences are not high enough fo my lot. OH has taken severe measures to keep them in one place. We had considered electric fencing, not to keep the foxes out but to keep the hens in!
jlo
Stupid question coming up. Am considering electric fencing but doesn't it hurt the chooks
mrs chook
In reflection to this post I cannot believe I think I am so good for outwitting a couple of hens You're not alone! You would not believe the satisfaction I got out of making a 'roll away' type nest box to stop mine eating the eggs. The first day I captured an egg, I felt incredibly smug Pathetic really, but smug all the same!
Mutrix Farmers
All three of mine regularly jump onto the eglu run and use it as a launch pad! The other day the run was over a metre from the Omlet fencing at its' nearest point. From the corner of my eye I saw a flapping and caaught two of them flying (proper flapping and lift!!) over the fence into the other half of the garden (the bit with grass still in it!!), but the third didn't quite make it and flew into the netting!! And their wings had been clipped quite recently!! Katie regularly jumps up onto the patio table which is a standard height! Cutting their wings off seems a bit drastic, but I might have to tie their wings to their bodies - chicken straitjackets anyone???
