poachedegg
Basically am growing celery but wanted to know when to harvest - do I just wait until it is at a required thickness or is there a specific criteria? Thanks in advance
Valkyrie
Can't really help much, because ours never really did well, but according to John Seymour (self-sufficient guru), wait till after the first frost and in some areas it can go on after Christmas. Ours all got slug munched and were very scrawny - even at the allotment too, so it must be something I did wrong somewhere! Good luck with your harvest. Lesley
I've never been able to grow it either! I buy seedling plants and then it grows but it's all spindly and never crsip and crunchy
Matthew
I've put celery in the 'just too difficult' category for home growing lol
chickencam
Same here, you need fairly heavy moisture retentive fertile soil to grow good celery it is a greedy and thirsty crop. We have the same problem with celeriac, I have tried for many years to grow it I have tended seedling carefully then planted them out and watered like mad, I have removed the lower leaves as suggested and have never grown anything bigger than a hairy tennis ball which by the time you have removed the roots and soil is more golf ball sized. I didn't bother this year Good luck with yours poachedegg.
poachedegg
You lot are useless!!!!! I must be doing something right because mine look quite good! That's why I wanted to know when to pick it - do I just wait until it achieves the thickness that I want?
Lesley
- if it ever does! Mine looked good but was thin and stringy We have the same problem with celeriac, I have tried for many years to grow it I have tended seedling carefully then planted them out and watered like mad, I have removed the lower leaves as suggested and have never grown anything bigger than a hairy tennis ball which by the time you have removed the roots and soil is more golf ball sized. I didn't bother this year Oh! No! - I've just planted celeriac for the first time
chickencam
I hope that you have more success Lesley. If you have heavier soil than us you will probably be ok ours is really sandy and we have to water everything to make it grow and we are always adding organic matter to it
chooklady
I've never grown celery but surely it's more of an autumn/winter veg. it's always at it's best around late autumn/Christmas time. perhaps it needs cooler, moisterr air to plump up the stalks, just an idea.
