andy1983!
Hi I have recently bought 4 chickens. I notice this evening that one has a overgrown bottom beak. Should i cut the beak back? It seems to be affecting the alignment of the top beak. I am concerned that this may cause feeding problems- i would say its 1 inch overgrown- please can anyone help with some advice Cheers Andy

Egluntyne
If you take it to the vet, they will trim it if they think it appropriate.
The Dogmother
Please don't try it on your own as the quick (blood-filled part) of the beak is very close to the tip. You vet will trim it for you. My Ruby has a malformed beak and has to have it trimmed every so often. It's not something that I'd be happy trying myself and I'll do most things to my hens. The Dogmother
From what you said, I was wondering whether the top beak has been trimmed - that would make the lower beak appear to stick out. Do you have any pics?
andy1983!
Hi Thanks for your comments. No the top beak is shaped correctly- its definatly the bottom beak that is overgrown. I will try to get some pictures. I will take her to the vets to get it trimmed i think- its not too bad so should be an inexpensive job. The Dogmother
I'd be interested to see some photos Andy, Make sure that you get an experienced poultry vet to do it.
