Introductions - another question!

Recommended Posts

I have had my 3 new girls in a rabbit hutch for a fortnight now. They go free ranging with the big girls (although there is mayhem if they wander into the wrong areas!). I was told that the girls were 18 weeks when I got tem, so 20 weeks now.

I know you're supposed to wait until 22 weeks before putting them together but one of my girls has always been visibly bigger and older than the other 2. She (Jeannie) has been crouching for the last week and is getting very vocal. Am I okay to leave her in the rabbit hutch/run for another 2 weeks or is she upset that she hasn't been provided with a nest box yet?

I'm worried that if I seperate her from her little sisters that she'll reject them when they're all integrated but I don't want to put her off laying because she has nowhere to roost...

Thyanks :)

do you think she will lay in the hutch? I put my 2 older girls in a hutch when I got the 2 newbies and though they free ranged during the day I left the hutch open and they just popped into the bed bit of that and laid there..but my newbies are only about 20-21 weeks now and though I was planning on waitign to merge completely they kind of did it themselves about a week ago. :D

When you say mayhem do you mean a bit of a chase, slight no real damage peck?

If so that's what to expect really - how about trying to pop them in to sleep with the others at dusk and separating them in the morning ?

If the mayhem involves damage when they wander into the wrong areas then it's best to wait a little longer.

I introduced 2 new ones to mine a few weeks ago, it's real heart in your mouth stuff isn't it. Although they were chased, there was no nastiness, yet I was on the verge of giving in many times.

I get up early anyway, but 10 days of rushing down at 4.15am to check all was OK has left me exhausted.

No blood was drawn but the big ones do tend to grab Skye's beaufiful blue feathers and fling her around a bit

The real mayhem broke out when the littlees got into the biggies nest box and were trapped. Again no blood though.

I think I do now need to start putting them in together at night and whipping them out in the morning. It's terrrifying - I don't think I'll sleep! When you put yours in did you wait till the others were in the eglu roosting then shove the others in?

Thanks for both of your answers!

I don't want to put her off laying because she has nowhere to roost... :)

Laying and roosting aren't really connected.

She will lay quite happily in the hutch. I'd wait till they are all a wee bit older, if only to avoid the inconvenience of managing 2 intros.
