I only got the girls yesterday and so I haven't put anything in the nesting box as yet. The lovely Omlet man recommended straw. What do you use? Also how soon should I fill the box ready for laying? They did roost on the bars last night but I am wondering if adding straw may encourage them to roost on the nest. However I did wake to find a nesting box full of poo.

I use Aubiose. It is lovely and soft.

 

I'm not a massive fan of straw. I used to use it but found it went claggy and damp and flattened very quickly. I found the same with shredded paper.

I can't seem to find a supplier of Auboise or Hemcore locally Egluntine. The place by us sells bliss bedding only. Have you tried that?

I use straw and it seems to work fine. Mine both sleep in the nest box as well as lay in it. I have to clear out the poo in the mornings but apart from that it's not too onerous and the chooks seem happy.

Dust free wood shavings of the kind you'd use in a rabbit hutch. The girls love it as it's cosy and soft and it's also nicely absorbent if they happen to sleep in the nest too. Good stuff - and pretty cheap too.

I have three of them sleeping in the nesting box, and two perched on dividing wall.

 

Stupid chickens.

 

I will block it off tomorrow so they get used to sleeping where they should.

I do have shredded paper so I will try that at first. They are very well behaved girls and nicely roost on the bars They still manage to poo in the nest box though

My shredded paper isn't cross shred just one long shred is that ok? Or could they eat it and it cause an issue with blocking their crops?

They aren't likely to eat it but it could twist around a toe and cut off the blood supply. Can you get the scissors to it before you put it in?

Yes, I've heard they can get tangled in it. It's suggested you tear the paper into a couple of bits before shredding it.

I usually use Aubiose but I was given clean wood shavings used for rabbit hutches.

 

I also mix in some red mite powder with the bedding so that when they nestle down they can powder their frilly knickers.

 

I started using bedding when the girls were showing signs of being about to lay, i.e. crouching and reddening of wattles etc.
