Meat- The thread for those raising their own

Recommended Posts

 That sounds very familliar.

Just said goodbye to the lovley cockerel we brought home last night. He has just left for his new harem of adoring laydees.

Took a snap of him before he went, here he is with one of our new hens.

They have slowly ventured out today, but the weather has been AWFULL!!

We will see him soon when we visit and hopefully will have some of his offspring soon.

Ah yes! They are beautiful. Could be a problem :anxious:

I may just end up with LOTS of chickens. Ah well

The cockerel has now settled into his new home with his two new laydees :D

Our two girs, Betty and Marge are settling in nicley.

Karen, pehaps Funkychuck could enlighten the omleteers as to why Katie and I named them Betty and Marge???

Hello everyone,

Can you advise please? My DS and DIL have just got an allotment and as a young family with 2 littleuns want to become as self sufficient as possible.

They already have 3 chooks in their garden which provide their eggs, and are now looking into the possibility of rearing chickens for meat.

They are lucky as the allotment already has a purpose built coop, large secure run and electronic opening and closing door thingy!

Having said all that....they feel able to raise and give some chickens the best life possible but are concerned that they would not be able to dispatch them! :anxious:

Soooo.....DS has asked me to ask you if there is anyone within a reasonable distance of Coventry who could assist with this task, what would you charge or could he barter or any other suggestions for getting his birds to the freezer!

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Our last three piggies went off to slaughter on Thursday :( - the whole place feels empty now - no cows and now no pigs :(

It feels so strange to not hear them - as soon as they saw Carl come home in the evening they would all come running out making a noise you just wouldn't believe

On the plus side........two of these pigs are for us :D - we've been collecting pigs from the abattoir over the last couple of weeks and then handing them over to others.......it was very strange to not have any pork after all the hard work :lol:

Had our last batch of 6 pigs back from the butchers on Sunday.

We have had a change of butcher this time to one much more local and all seems to be ok. I do like our old butcher though and on balance Im not sure which one I prefer.

This butcher does all his bacon and ham the traditional way using salt whereas the other injects the salt into the meat. I havent had the bacon back yet so we will see what the difference is.

We have never had hams before so Im quite exited about that.

It was sausage for tea last night. :D

Our bees are tucked up in bed for the winter after a hopeless season, vegi patch all dug and tidyed and we just have 5 hens in the garden at the moment laying eggs, so all quiet untill spring here.

I have booked OH onto a 'culling course' - so I will post here how it goes and whether to recommend to other omleteers - it looks good and reasonably priced and designed for the home chicken, rather than smallholder.

As a bonus, he is even going to take two of our first batch with him to be 'done' as part of the course. They are now 9 weeks old and seem to be slowing down a bit - more sitting around and eating, but active for part of the day and eating plenty of grass as well as their rations.
